Aside from being an excellent album musically, this is a very important record in the overall scope of things: first, it was the record that brought Ricky Skaggs to the forefront as a “new traditionalist” in country music—with it he began a series of albums that not only brought a more traditional sound to country music (which was getting pretty watered down in the late 1970s), but also brought an appreciation & respect for Bluegrass music to Nashville. Second, it brought significant attention to the new Sugar Hill label, which soon established itself as one of the leading two or three Bluegrass oriented labels in the country. Skaggs genius was to take hard-core traditional songs and give them a good dose of contemporary styling, without selling out or watering the music down.

Singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby rocketed to popular and critical attention in the mid-1980s with his sophisticated and soulful rock music. The master pianist and his backing group take the stage here at the Rockpalast in 1990, performing a set which includes such hits as "Jacob's Ladder," "Mandolin Rain," and the chart topping "The Way It Is." Hornsby beautifully demonstrates both his vocal range and his impeccable piano stylings, while the Range provide a full yet unobtrusive supporting sound.

Never let it be said that Bruce Hornsby has had a predictable career. He very well could have followed one of two paths after his first two albums -- he could have continued turning out heartland rock, or slipped into adult contemporary balladeering. He chose a third path -- a restless, sometimes bewildering, foray into experimentation, heavy on jazz and improvisation; there was a reason he played with the Grateful Dead, after all...

His time spent as a keyboardist with the Grateful Dead obviously put a bit of boogie into Bruce Hornsby's soul, as SPIRIT TRAIL makes it clear that Hornsby's graduated from Donald Fagen impressions to a more eclectic, rootsy approach that incorporates R&B, folk-rock, blues and more...
