Hilding Rosenberg (1892-1985), the patriarch of 20th century Swedish music, wrote altogether 14 string quartets, the first in 1920 and the final more than half a century later. This makes him one of the most prolific composers of chamber music in Scandinavia. Also artistically, by virtue of his very personal approach, his power of expression and his technical mastery, Rosenberg’s production is truly outstanding. This CD contains the Quartets No. 3 and 9. The participating musicians are: The Lysell Quartet.

Label:CPO - Date:1998

Walter Braunfels was one of those all-too-ubiquitous figures in the German musical world of the 1920s and early '30s, who – through no fault of his, and even less of his music – managed to go from the center of the musical world to near-complete-obscurity as a composer. And that obscurity lingered for decades after his death in 1954, until the end of the twentieth century, when he was belatedly rediscovered

String quartet writing is alive and well in America. Before I bought this CD I had never heard of Kenneth Fuchs. But members of the American String Quartet are old friends and I typically buy their new releases. I'm glad I did. Fuchs, Director of the School of Music at the University of Oklahoma, and formerly Dean of Students and Academics at the Manhattan School of Music, is a real composer. On the basis of these three quartets, one can say that he has a genuine lyrical gift, as well as a masterful sense of form, expert counterpoint, rhythmic verve, and drama. The Second Quartet has five movements inspired by five different pieces ……

Gyorgy Ligeti - String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2, Cello Sonata (Dedreuil, Quatuor Bela)

Gyorgy Ligeti - String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2, Cello Sonata (Dedreuil, Quatuor Bela)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 279 Mb
Label:Aeon - Date:2013

This disc brings together the string quartets of György Ligeti, who died in 2006. They are played by the Béla Quartet, quite young yet already past masters in the interpretation of this music and especially appreciated for their work of precision and refinement, commitment, homogeneity and musicality. In their playing, energy and subtlety alternate constantly in an ongoing search for colours, harmonies, rhythms and contrasts. These two works of rare intensity, sometimes blazing brilliantly, allow for understanding how Ligeti's music, regardless of its complexity and rigour, can nonetheless appeal to a very broad public. Here, creation and daring are constant.
