Even when she's crafting hits for other people, there's a vulnerability in Sia's songwriting that rings true. On This Is Acting, she sings some of the songs she wrote for — and were rejected by — stars such as Adele, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. Though they were intended for other singers, Sia sounds as commanding and genuine as ever. "Alive," which she co-wrote with Adele, has an empowering sweep that Sia takes in a direction that is all hers, while "Bird Set Free" is both intimate and anthemic, a territory of which she is the queen.

Sia Tolno's explosive new album "African Woman" is prouced by Afrobeat legend Tony Allen and carries on in the same way as many of his classic recordings. Explosive: a woman takes up Afrobeat! The Yoruba, funk, jazz fusion of Afrobeat is rough, rowdy and political. It was introduced at the end of the 60s by the prince of the Nigerian resistance, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Yet Guinea's Sia Tolno is not afraid to take up Fela's torch. Her third album, African Woman, challenges male supremacy in a forceful style derived from Ghanaian 'high-life'.

Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, to use the name her musician parents gave her, already has a staggering track record. If her name itself - pronounced ‘See-ah’ - isn’t familiar to millions, her voice undoubtedly is. In 2000, the Adelaide born singer scored a bolt from the blue Top 10 hit with her debut single, Taken For Granted. Pairing her unique Australian drawl with the strident strings from Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, the track was championed by Trevor Nelson and had Sia performing live on Jo Whiley’s Radio 1 show. Her debut album, ‘Healing Is Difficult’, arrived to similar cries of ´the next big R&B thing’. Then, to cap it all, she added her jazzy slurs to two tracks on Zero 7’s Simple Things album and became the unmistakable voice of the year’s coolest down-tempo soundtrack. All the pieces for a phenomenal career seemed to be in place.
