On the outs in Hollywood due to the blacklist, director Edward Dmytryk briefly operated in England in the late 1940s. Though filmed in its entirety in London, Dmytryk's Give Us This Day is set in New York during the depression. Fellow blacklistee Sam Wanamaker is starred as the head of an Italian immigrant family struggling to survive the economic crisis. Perhaps had it been made in Hollywood as intended, Give Us This Day would not have been allowed to run on for 120 minutes, nor would the actors have been permitted to indulge in terminal sanctimony. Based on Pietro di Donato's novel Christ in Concrete, Give Us This Day was released in the US under the intriguing title Salt to the Devil.

Another reason for getting this wonderful release is Robert Fischer’s superlative, eye-opening, 110-minute Return to Beethoven Street: Sam Fuller in Germany, which does a fine job of unpacking Fuller’s best and in some ways most neglected European film.

My Girl Tisa gave American audiences their first real glimpse of the charms of Lilli Palmer, who had been making waves in Great Britain in a number of films for a decade previously. Here she has the starring role as a Hungarian immigrant dealing with the plight of survival in New York's Lower East Side, swarming with tenement apartments, sweatshops and all the rascals needed to keep the plot spinning. Sam Wanamaker was a pleasant choice for a co-star and Warners surrounded them with a top notch supporting cast, headed by Akim Tamiroff (studying hard for his naturalization test), Hugo Haas, Stella Adler and Alan Hale and gave the production some nice pictorial touches with regard to costumes and music for the early 20th century flavor.

This fascinating Japanese drama takes an objective look at the relationship between American GIs and deserters in Japan during the Vietnam war. Many of the men went on leave to Tokyo. Some did not want to return and ended up sheltered by Japanese "host families" who would conceal them for a night. The story centers on the different experiences of an exhausted deserter, and a gung-ho soldier. Meanwhile, the Japanese "Deserter's Aid Committee" holds audiences with would-be dodgers.

Summer Soldiers tells the stories of two AWOL American GIs, adrift in the inhospitable refuge of a Japan committed to supporting the U.S. “war effort”. Shunted to and fro among host families of anti-war sympathizers, both men seek some natural haven and an end to being fugitives. At first encouraged by what they see as acceptance and understanding from the people they meet, they soon realize that they are political pawns being used to gratify anti-war sentiments of radical groups, as well as, paradoxically, their anti-Americanism. The GIs discover that there is no real place for them in Japan, except as fringe dwellers.
