The real jewel of this collection is disc 2 which pulls tracks from Sandra's 92's masterpiece album "Close to Seven" and 95's "Fading Shades". All the tracks on disc 2 are great, which also includes First Lullaby which to me, is her greatest and most beautiful song of all time. Disc 2 is mostly slower ballads with a slight upbeat touch. Sandra has a very beautiful soft and seductive voice which makes her perfect for delivering sultry ballads.

In the town where country music was born where two states come together on one street a spark lit and a duo was ignited. At the 2012 Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, on the way to take the stage with his band, Sol Driven Train, guitarist/singer Joel Timmons found himself sidetracked by Della Mae, an all-female, GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass band. It was that group's bass player, Shelby Means, who most captivated his attention. After a conversation at the merchandise table about their shared love of travel and music, two-years passed before Means and Timmons would reconnect. A bold love song led the way, and eventually a growing romance turned into the Nashville-based duo Sally & George and their debut album tip my heart.

Rachel Newton specialises in creating atmospheric new settings for songs that are for the most part sad, spooky or unsettling. Her last solo album, Changeling, was a concept work based around folk tales, but this set is held together by mood rather than narrative. There are traditional American songs from the Ozark mountains, including the brooding title track and the intriguing Poor Lost Baby, along with Scottish Gaelic songs and a suitably haunting treatment of The Bloody Gardener, a finely told story of treachery, murder and the supernatural. Her cool, no-nonsense vocals are backed by her own harp and piano, providing melody, rhythm and bass lines, and she’s helped by the subtle addition of fiddle, percussion and brass. Newton may be best known for her work with the Furrow Collective, the Shee and the Emily Portman Trio, but she’s an increasingly compelling solo performer.

Today, Chuck Willis is rightly acknowledged as a breakthrough pioneer of R&B who, after a few years of R&B only chart hits suddenly broke through to the pop market with five hits between 1957 and 1958. "It's Too Late" was a hit for Chuck in 1956 and proved instantly popular with other R&B stars as well as pop stars generating recordings from Buddy Holly, Eric Clapton, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich (featured here), Otis Redding and many others including most recently Kanye West who used a sample of Otis Redding's version of the song "It's Too Late" on his multi-platinum album 'Late Registration' for the track "Gone". Chuck Willis was a real singer/songwriter before the description was ever used and this superb 2CD set from Jasmine is a fitting testimonial to Chuck's immense talent.

Influenced by Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster but definitely his own person, Ike Quebec was one of the finest swing-oriented tenor saxman of the 1940s and '50s. Though he was never an innovator, Quebec had a big, breathy sound that was distinctive and easily recognizable, and he was quite consistent when it came to came to down-home blues, sexy ballads, and up-tempo aggression. –Alex Henderson
