Since her debut in 1988, Sarah McLachlan's atmospheric folk-pop has gained a devoted following not only in her native Canada, where she established star status with her first album, but also in the U.S. and U.K. The following two decades saw her grow both as a musician and songwriter, continually redefining herself and emerging as a major voice in the growing adult alternative pop format. She also founded Lilith Fair, a concert tour that helped usher other female songwriters into the mainstream during the late '90s, while maintaining her own presence on the charts.

Sarah McLachlan may have a quarter century of recording under her belt, but she has very few compilations in her discography. Prior to 2013's The Essential Sarah McLachlan, there was really only one: 2008's Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan and, as she only released one other album since that compilation (2010's Laws of Illusion), there would seem not to be much territory for this set to cover, but The Essential is a very different compilation than Closer. That 2008 collection served up 16 basics, but this double-disc set runs 30 tracks, digging deep into her early pre-hit material as well as the music she made after she turned into a star.

Sarah McLachlan's 1999 Mirrorball, her first ever live album, showed off the singer in the prime of career, when her popularity both as an artist and as the organizer of Lilith Fair had made her a star. And while that record was good, and exposed the talents of McLachlan's powerful, clear voice and the strength of her band, it generally stuck to her most famous songs, especially those off her then most recent album, Surfacing. That same year, however, a DVD of the last shows on her concert tour (in Portland, OR, on April 20 and 21, 1998), Mirrorball, also came out, and it featured the singer's entire set list – which pulled from all four of the albums she had out – as well as her conversations with the audience and her between-sing banter. Mirrorball: The Complete Concert, released in 2006, includes the audio tracks from that show, banter (even more banter, in fact) included.

Touch is the debut album by Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, released in 1988 and then re-released in 1989. The album was popular in alternative rock circles, but McLachlan would not achieve commercial stardom…

More than just a video translation of Sarah McLachlan's live best-of album, Mirrorball presents 25 of her best-loved songs along with some DVD-specific extras. "Building a Mystery," "I Love You," "Into the Fire," "Possession," and "Sweet Surrender" are among the songs that benefit from the live setting, enriched by McLachlan's slightly theatrical performance and her muscular yet fluid backing band. The concert looks as good as it sounds, shot on film rather than videotape for a more artistic visual style.

After touring in 1999, Sarah McLachlan took a break, pretty much keeping to herself until she released her new album, Afterglow, earlier this year. McLachlan just completed her North American tour and will spend the rest of the year touring Europe, but, considering her taste for hiatus, who knows when she'll be back on the road. To tide fans over, McLachlan's people have prepped a new live CD/DVD package. On November 23 Afterglow Live will hit the shelves of your local music store. The set includes a 23-track DVD packaged with a 15-track CD.
