Lupu is a keyboard poet, and Schubert's lyrical gems seem as though they were written for his interpretive artistry. He sings the gorgeous melodies with limpid, beautiful tone. The intimacy Lupu achieves in the G-flat impromptu sounds almost personal, an effect heightened by the transparent engineering. There's a luminosity to Lupu's traversal of these remarkable works that's irresistible; his pianism alternates subtle lights and shades. While the playing is elegant and refined, he doesn't stint on the dramatic contrasts in the music, nor does he neglect the dark poetry that pulls it into deeper regions. There are many fine versions of these classics; Lupu's stands with the best. –Dan Davis

This pianist, born in 1962, is at the head of an impressive career, both as a concert artist and a teacher (he is a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, after having been a teacher at Lyon), and his Discography is expanded from season to season: Debussy, Chausson, Liszt, Chopin; And many, many Schubert. This album proposes two of his ultimate sonatas: the unfathomable Sonata in B-flat major with its "divine lengths", written two months before death, and the Fourteenth in A minor of 1823, the last conceived in three movements . Denis Pascal is a pianist of clarity, articulation, phrasing, singing. We think we are witnessing a "renaissance" of the works, as if they were improvising them for us.

The sixth volume in Matthias Goerne's survey of Franz Schubert's lieder includes the posthumous collection Schwanengesang, which contains some of the loveliest and most disturbing songs Schubert ever composed. One problem in performing this ambiguous work of Schubert's last year lies in its alternation of sweet, lyrical songs with those of a much darker and even frightening character, and it's left to the singer and the pianist to balance the moods and to make the contrasts of expression as subtle as possible. Goerne and his accompanist Christoph Eschenbach meet the challenge by carefully shading the songs with a tempering of expressions that admits sorrow in the midst of joy and hope in the depths of despair.
