Lupu is a keyboard poet, and Schubert's lyrical gems seem as though they were written for his interpretive artistry. He sings the gorgeous melodies with limpid, beautiful tone. The intimacy Lupu achieves in the G-flat impromptu sounds almost personal, an effect heightened by the transparent engineering. There's a luminosity to Lupu's traversal of these remarkable works that's irresistible; his pianism alternates subtle lights and shades. While the playing is elegant and refined, he doesn't stint on the dramatic contrasts in the music, nor does he neglect the dark poetry that pulls it into deeper regions. There are many fine versions of these classics; Lupu's stands with the best. –Dan Davis

His Brahms series being now complete in six volumes and widely praised, Barry Douglas continues his exploration of Schubert’s piano music. The romantic, personal outlook developed in the course of the Brahms survey is fully expressed in this new Schubert volume: deeply characteristic works written in the nostalgic, yet prolific last years of the composer’s short life.

…few pianists illuminate this music better. With him, even the "heavenly length" of some movements becomes a delight, and you don't want them to end.

This is a magnificent recital captured in beautifully recorded 5.1 surround sound. My benchmark in this repertoire has always been Rubinstein. Now we have Zimmerman who knows how to express the poetry, fire and soul in this music with self-effacing, consummate virtuosity. The program includes the 4 Ballades, the wonderful Fantasie in f# minor and the great f-minor Barcarolle, among others. I haven't listened to the Schubert yet, but my expectations are high. If you love Chopin, buy this DVD and immerse yourself in this gorgeous music. Krystian Zimerman’s peerless artistry, filmed in 1987 by director Humphrey Burton.

In 5.1 DTS Surround Sound.

On this 2012 release, award-winning pianist Paul Lewis turns his attention back to to Franz Schubert, the other key focus of his concert career and the other pillar of his discography. Schubert's Piano Sonata, D.845 was the first of his three sonatas to be published during his lifetime. In July of 1825 Schubert wrote a long letter to his parents, in which he stated: "They particularly enjoyed the variations from my new sonata for piano solo, which I performed quite successfully, and several people assured me that under my fingers the keys began to sing. If this is sincere, it makes me very happy since I cannot stand the wretched hacking which is typical of even excellent pianists, as it pleases neither the ear nor the heart".
