On this recording, Paul Lewis performs two major works of the keyboard repertoire. Decidedly programmatic, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is more commonly heard today in Ravel's orchestral version. However, the original for solo piano is both a technical tour-de-force and a brilliant example of the composer's coloristic gifts. The pairing is Schumann's Fantaisie Op.17, a work whose movements originally had evocative titles (Ruin, Triumphal Arch, Constellation). The 'program' was removed before publication, but the 'pictures' Schumann intended listeners to imagine remain.

Compiled from two distinct recording sessions, 2010 and 2014, this rather anomalous pairing of Schumann and Mussorgsky by British virtuoso Paul Lewis offers some exquisite sonorities in the course of his traversal of two monuments of the Romantic repertory.

The Humoreske Op.20 is an incredible cycle, and another of those piece which hides remarkable musical power behind an innocent sounding title. Lupu shows the Harlequin mask slipping, and has a way of emphasising grotesque elements in the music. Where there is lyricism this sings, but Schumann never really allows it to flow in any predictable direction and Lupu responds to every unconventional aberration with glee. The Kinderszenen are somewhat safer musical ground, and Lupu’s sensitivity to Schumann’s idiom means just enough but not too much teasing and stretching of the ends of phrases. Each of the little sketches and character moods are given enough value and weight, with the poise of the central Dreaming very much an eye at the centre of the rest of the pieces, all of which whirl and orbit with their own sense of vibrant life. Kreisleriana has aspects of the ultimate virtuoso showpiece, and Radu Lupu skates through its difficulties with effortless ease and a sense of nobility which reaches to the heart of the music.

Robert Schumann wrote his Arabeske in C major, Op. 18 in 1839, dedicating it to Frau Majorin Friederike Serre auf Maxen, to whom he also dedicated his Blumenstück in D flat, Op. 19. In the autumn of 1838 Schumann had left Leipzig for Vienna. His relationship with Clara Wieck had reached a point of no return, as her father vehemently opposed anything that might interfere with his daughter's career as a pianist and strongly disapproved of Schumann as a possible son-in-law. Geographically yet not emotionally detached from Clara, he was able to communicate with her only through letters and in his own music. This has been proposed as an explanation for this work, which alternates passages of wistful longing with more robust, declamatory episodes.

A decade after his highly acclaimed In Concert album, master pianist András Schiff continues his documentation of Robert Schumann's music in a program which includes: Papillons op. 2, Klaviersonate fis-moll op. 11, Kinderszenen op. 15, Fantasie C-Dur op. 17, Waldszenen op. 82, Thema mit Variationen (Geistervariationen). This is sure to be viewed as a revelatory re-investigation of this enormously influential Romantic music.
