Cortlandt (1996) is the first solo CD by bassist/composer Sean Malone. It features a rich tapestry of musical styles, from fusion, to world music, to the Baroque. It contains, as Sean puts it "a lot of the bits and pieces that never made it to the setlists of the groups I've played in" with a focus on fusion melody and harmony (Controversy, Splinter, Giant Steps). As much as it is a showcase for performance, Cortlandt is the freshman offering of Sean's composition and arranging skills, utilizing an array of textures and instrumentation.

Modern prog fusion supergroup, founded by great Cynic bassist Sean Malone. On this debut album participated Warr guitar genius Trey Gunn (ex-King Crimson), drummer Sean Reinert (Cynic), John Myung (Dream Theater, Chapman Stick-as guest) and two morw Warr/stick guitarists! You can enjoy a very good melange of Fusion, King Crimson Art Rock and a little bit Prog Metal. Absolutely great debut! Should be interesting for modern KC lovers, must have for Trey Gunn or Sean Malone fans. Very recommended for everyone searching for fresh and modern prog, running out from neo-prog cliches!

Emergent is the second release under the moniker "Gordian Knot". A common question asked is if GK is a solo effort, or a band. The answer is that it's a bit of both. While Sean Malone is the primary composer, each musician involved is free to contribute in his or her own way. Suggestions are made regarding certain key elements, creating a framework within which each performer adds his or her own interpretation. As with the début CD, Gordian Knot benefits its own genre by not being a part of it; in other words, the core of the music is the structure and pitches, presenting itself in several textural guises all the while leaving room for each performer to show his musicianship and voice.
Emergent is an extension of the compositional style presented in the first Gordian Knot release, with an emphasis on large-scale compositions (Some Brighter Thing, Singing Deep Mountain), thematic content between and within the pieces, and dense, contrapuntal layers.

So rare and highly sought after are many of these tracks by Disco connoisseurs that the original 12's of this album would likely cost you several thousand pounds, if you were lucky enough to find them in the first place. This collection spans the years 1976-'82, with an R&B slant and more song-based material; and is intended to show that there were a few more sides many more to come, of course to one of the last century's biggest musical phenomena.

Russell Malone recording this studio date for Venus in 1995, though it was several years before the Japanese label got around to issuing it. Joined by an excellent rhythm section consisting of Larry Willis, Rodney Whitaker, and Yoron Israel, Malone is not afraid to go into lengthy exploration of an old favorite like "I Concentrate on You."

Russell Malone can play it all — rock, pop, country, blues, jazz — you name it. But as anyone who has heard his recording knows, he's most at home (and comfortable) when he's playing jazz. And we as listeners are rewarded with some of the most beautiful sounds, tones and phrasing possible on the guitar. On Jazz at The Bistro, Malone is joined by pianist Benny Green. While live recordings in small rooms (and St. Louis's The Bistro is a small club) can be even more difficult to properly record than "regular" live recordings, Jazz At The Bistro is an excellent testament to Malone's and Green's virtuosity.
