The news that a flowering weed-mousear cress (Arabidopsis thaliana)-can sense the particular chewing noise of its most common caterpillar predator and adjust its chemical defenses in response led to headlines announcing the discovery of the first "hearing" plant.

Acoustic Sensing Techniques for the Shallow Water Environment: Inversion Methods and Experiments by Andrea Caiti
English | August 29, 2006 | ISBN: 1402043724 | 332 pages | PDF | 31 MB

This volume contains thecollection of papers from the second workshop on Expe- mental Acoustic Inversion Techniques for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment. The works hop the me followed the original conceptof the rstworkshop, heldin Carvoeiro, Portugal, in 1999, i.e., to focus on experiments and experimental techniques for acoustic sensing in the shallow ocean. More than forty leading international scientists were invited to meet in the picturesque town of St. Angelo on the island of Ischia, in June 2004, to discuss progress in the application of new experimental techniques for exploration and assessment of shallowwater environments. Acoustic techniques provide the most effective means for remote sensing of ocean and sea oor processes, and for probing the structure beneath the sea oor. No other energy propagates as ef ciently in the ocean: radio waves and visible light are severely limited in range because the ocean is a highly conductive medium. However, sound from bre- ing waves and coastal shipping can be heard throughout the ocean, and marine mammals communicate acoustically over basin scale distances.

Fundamentals of Polarimetric Remote Sensing (repost)

John R. Schott, "Fundamentals of Polarimetric Remote Sensing"
2009 | ISBN: 0819475343 | 270 pages | PDF | 12 MB

Polarimetric remote sensing offers the potential to provide a new dimension for observations of the Earth. This book takes a systems approach to the physical processes involved with formation, collection, and analysis of polarimetric remote sensing data in the visible through longwave infrared. The emphasis is on Earth observation at human scales (ground sample distances of fractions of a meter to tens of meters) where the contrast between manmade objects and natural backgrounds are typical subjects of interest.

InTeOp | 2012 | ISBN: 9535107989 9789535107989 | 727 pages | PDF | 42 MB

This book tries to summarize in an edited format and in a fairly comprehensive manner, many of the recent technical research accomplishments in the area of Smart Actuators and Smart Sensors. The book hopefully reflects the multicultural nature of the field and will allow the reader to taste and appreciate different points of view, different engineering methods and different tools that must be jointly considered when designing and realizing smart actuation and sensing systems.
