A major figure in early jazz, outstanding clarinettist, only soprano saxophonist of consequence for decades, made melodically rich and emotional music. Sidney Bechet was the first important jazz soloist on records in history (beating Louis Armstrong by a few months). A brilliant soprano saxophonist and clarinetist with a wide vibrato that listeners either loved or hated, Bechet's style did not evolve much through the years but he never lost his enthusiasm or creativity. This collection of Bechet tracks cut between 1932 and 1941…

Sidney Bechet (May 14, 1897 – May 14, 1959) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. He was one of the first important soloists in jazz (beating cornetist and trumpeter Louis Armstrong to the recording studio by several months and later playing duets with Armstrong), and was perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist. Forceful delivery, well-constructed improvisations, and a distinctive, wide vibrato characterized Bechet's playing.

Bechet made several outstanding albums in France, mostly with Claude Luter's orchestra. On this one, he plays soprano sax much more than clarinet. The arrangements are outstanding, and the sound quality is special. No Bechet fan (or clarinet/sax fan) should be without this! Sidney Bechet needs no introduction to lovers of traditional New Orleans jazz. Like many African-American musicians, he found a deeper recognition in Europe, and so settled in France and made many recordings during the 1950's for the French Vogue label. These have now been collected, remastered and reissued on a French release by Sony Legacy. It's good to have this available through Amazon. Essential for any collector of traditional jazz…
Christof Lauer & NDR Big Band Play Sidney Bechet - Petite Fleur (2014)

German saxophonist Christof Lauer joins forces with the NDR Bigband for Petite Fleur , an album celebrating Sidney Bechet, one of the founding fathers of jazz. Bechet played the soprano saxophone like no other, and with his French-Creole-inspired compositions, he was a forerunner of jazz's openness to all musical styles. Unmistakable Bechet classics appear in an entirely new light thanks to Lauer's distinctive tone and the multilayered arrangements. Though Lauer is best known as a tenor saxophonist, the album begins with the soprano saxophone, and Sidney Bechet's typical vibrato is replaced by Lauer's intense and expressive sound.

For generations, Sidney Bechet's legacy of great jazz recordings has been reissued carefully, both casually and haphazardly. One of several chronological options, the 12-volume Masters of Jazz "Complete Edition" takes a most exactingly thorough approach, mapping Bechet's every appearance in the recording studio, week by week and session by session, regardless of who was initially designated as the primary artist. 1923, Vol. 1 in the series covers a four-month period from late July to early November 1923…

Throughout his long career, Bob Wilber has done a lot to keep classic jazz alive. A bit misplaced (most jazz players of his generation were much more interested in bop and hard bop), Wilber (along with Kenny Davern, Ralph Sutton, and Dick Wellstood) was one of the few in his age group to stick to pre-bop music. In high school he formed a band that included Wellstood, and as a teenager he sat in at Jimmy Ryan's club in New York.
