The story is considered within fandom to be one of the most controversial stories ever told for Spider-Man if not in the comics industry as a whole. The story was intended to wrap up in less than a year. However, the comics sold very well and the writers were encouraged to prolong the saga as long as possible. This led to some changes to the storyline that ultimately proved unpopular. To me there's only one word to describe it: shtoo-pid. That's what happens when creativity and creative freedom is thrown out the window because of greed. is the new six-part mini-series based on the outline of the original Clone Saga. Marvel revisits the scene of the original Secret Wars crossover storyline with ol' webhead taking center stage. This time Spider-Man and Ben Grimm in his human form explore the city of Denver that has been relocated by the Beyonder for Battleworld (for reasons still beyond me) and defend it against a race of aliens, with an unexpected ally. From the hilarious tongue-in-cheek interplay and poking fun of the first issue, the second issue plays it as a straight action story. For me the funniest part is still why Denver, of all places..? I'll withhold further comment.

Joe Kelly, winner of IGN's Writer of the Year Award for 2009 shows it's no fluke with his rendition of Rhino in the Gauntlet, the current storyline that reboots or reinvents Spidey's Classic Rogues' gallery. Rhino is given a such depth of character in a manner so simple in an approach so different from what previous Gauntlet writers Fred Van Lente (with the Sandman) and Mark Waid (with Electro) did. Yet, it is in a manner so perfectly clicking into place that this by far is the best. Not only that, the main and backup stories mesh together to form a seamless background and understanding of how Aleksei Sytsevich ceased to be the Rhino and became a normal human being. Great artwork by Max Fiumara and Javier Pulido. The highpoint for me is when Spider-Man talks to Aleksei with heartfelt sincerity to just go on living as he should. I believe Kelly is making a point to Marvel editors and all those corporate bigwigs to try and shake them loose from their "big event"-driven "crossover" mindsets, and simply bring the game home. I do hope they listen.

"The first piece of Amazing Spider-Man's "Gauntlet" storyline, featuring the return of Spidey's more notorious foes like Rhino and the Lizard, continues this week. This initial arc features Electro, and the presence of a more recognizable villain, coupled with a stellar creative team, results in one of the best issues of this series in some time." That's a quote from IGN editor Bryan Joel's review of issue #613. He immediately notes that one of the things he loves most for this issue is the artwork of Paul Azaceta, as having a palpably Silver Age influence to it. Don't look now but last ish I did mention it as strikingly reminiscent of vintage Jack Kirby with a dash of Steve Ditko going through a dark, moody phase--and I believe my description is the more accurate. Mark Waid also brings a rare credible core to Electro as he imbues this erstwhile two-dimensional villain with heretofore unrealized flesh and character, even as he manages to seamlessly introduce granularity and atmosphere from the very start of his work on the title. IGN gave this issue an "Impressive" 8.3 out of 10 rating. I disagree. You may say I'm biased, but, going by IGN's ratings system, it is at least a "Great" 8.9 for me.
