The album consists of songs by classical European composers and includes tracks sung in English, French, Occitan, German, Italian and Latin. The music is performed by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Claus Ogerman. Leonard Bernstein wrote of the album, "Barbra Streisand's natural ability to make music takes her over to the classical field with extraordinary ease. It's clear that she loves these songs. In her sensitive, straightforward, and enormously appealing performance, she has given us a very special musical experience." The album has been certified Gold in the United States for sales of 500,000 on May 5, 1999.

"Emotion" is the twenty-third studio album released by Barbra Streisand. It was released on October 9, 1984, and went platinum in the United States on December 18 the same year. This album was recorded in eleven studios in Los Angeles and two in New York with a multitude of producers and writers. The album was promoted by a music video of the title track "Emotion", starring Streisand, The Who's Roger Daltrey and Mikhail Baryshnikov. "Left in the Dark" also received a music video, reuniting Streisand with Kris Kristofferson, her costar from A Star Is Born. The album peaked at #19 on the US chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. According to the liner notes of Barbra's retrospective box set, Just for the Record, the album also received a record certification in the Netherlands.

My Name Is Barbra, Two… is the second of two studio album tie-ins to Barbra Streisand's debut television special, My Name Is Barbra, which first aired on April 28, 1965. The Medley (Track 11) is the only music from the show, and the other tracks newly recorded for the album. Barbra remembers in Just For The Record: "'Second Hand Rose' became part of a tongue-in-cheek fantasy sequence which was shot at Bergdorf Goodman's…And thanks to people I loved and loved working with—Joe Layton, Dwight Hemion, Peter Matz, Robert Emmett, Tom John, and, of course, Marty—I was able to realize my dream." The album was also certified Platinum and peaked at #2 on the US charts and #6 in the UK charts.
