The early 50s was a heyday for vocal groups, riding the wave of middle-of-the-road popular music in the Tin Pan Alley-dominated years before rock n roll changed pop music for ever. The Ames Brothers were one of the most popular of those groups, making their US chart debut in 1948, and racking up a lengthy string of hits over the next few years, including memorable No. 1s like Rag Mop, Sentimental Me and You, You, You.

With Tom Johnston gone from the lineup because of health problems, this is where the "new" Doobie Brothers really make their debut, with a richly soulful sound throughout and emphasis on horns and Michael McDonald's piano more than on Patrick Simmons' or Jeff Baxter's guitars…

Willie Nelson has been a prolific singer and recording artist since the 1970s, but the songwriter who penned hits for Ray Price, Patsy Cline, Billy Walker, and Johnny Cash, among others, hasn't issued an album of predominantly original material since 1996. Band of Brothers ends the drought. Its 14 selections include nine new songs by Nelson (with producer Buddy Cannon) and a handful of fine covers. Opener "Bring It On" is a honky tonk waltz that offers wisdom by someone who has lived through plenty as he looks eternity squarely in the eye. He is in excellent voice as Mickey Raphael's harmonica moans to underscore his lyric. Nelson delivers his first guitar solo on Trigger (his nylon-stringed instrument). His playing, with its unique phrasing, has always been underrated and here it evokes the blues. His love songs have always been highlights in his catalog. "I Thought I Left You" is in 4/4, with a slow processional pace adorned with slippery steel and piano. The lost romance portrayed in the waltz "Send Me a Picture" is another clear standout; a sighing pedal steel and Raphael's mid-register wail echo every sung line.

Born in Martinique, these three talented brothers, Chris, Patrick, and Alex Gibson, began performing together in 1976. Their sound has been called disco-salsa by some, simply hot by others. The single, "Come to America," was recorded that first year, 1976. It landed on many European music charts, becoming a number one hit on some. In 1977, the Gibson Brothers' tune, "Non Stop Dance," was a million seller. This hit single found the European charts as well. Three years later the brothers broke onto the charts worldwide, including the American Billboard Top Ten, with a little number called "Cuba." It sold over four million copies and earned 14 gold records. The course seemed set, and other releases like "Ooh What a Life" and "Que Sera Mi Vida" did as well, and even better.

This 1960 recording, reissued on a 1998 CD, was not only the debut recording of trumpeter Chuck Mangione but has the first appearances on record by tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico, pianist Gap Mangione, and drummer Roy McCurdy; altoist Larry Combs and bassist Bill Saunders complete the group. "The Jazz Brothers" were based in Rochester, NY and recorded two further albums. Chuck Mangione's own fame was a decade away and, at this early point in time, he was a Dizzy Gillespie-inspired bebop trumpeter. The sextet performs "Secret Love," "Girl of My Dreams," and five straight-ahead group originals with spirit and swing. Pity that the group never really did catch on.~ Scott Yanow

This two-fer combines two classic records by the Everly Brothers, simply the greatest close harmony duo in rock history. Containing both of the duo's 1958 eponymous debut and the 1984 Rhino compilation THE FABULOUS STYLE OF THE EVERLY BROTHERS, this collection features many of the songs that sent them and their harmonic thirds to the upper reaches of the Billboard charts: "Bye Bye Love," "When Will I Be Loved," "Wake Up Little Suzie," and "All I Have to Do is Dream," among many other lesser known gems. A de facto greatest-hits album, the set is a perfect diving-off point for those interested in the many highlights of the Everlys' early years.
