A gripping story of the plight of a desperate group of jewish refugees who leave Romania to escape a brutal regime but end up facing an even worse fate. Despite being a true story, the tragic events unfold in a way that makes it compulsive reading. The factual information has been meticulously unearthed and the juxtoposition of wartime events with a latterday attempt by a family member to find out more about his lost relatives is a technique which keeps the reader enthralled. Personal focus on individual victims, especially David Stoliar, the sole survivor of the disaster make this story all the more moving. I highly recommend this book.

Contemporary academia relies upon categorization. One can study Africa or Europe; East or West; the Middle Ages or the Early Modern period. In this innovative collection of essays, the Mediterranean is taken as a whole. The birthplace of the three principal monotheistic religions, it is shown to be a distinct cultural space characterized by hybridity, diversity, and cultural dynamism.

In Torn in Two the great Lakes historian recreates the circumstances surrounding the terrible storm of November 29, 1966, that broke the mighty freighter in half, sending twenty-five of the Morrell’s twenty-nine-man crew to their deaths and consigning the surviving four to the freezing raft where all but Hale would perish.
