The music of Syzygy is an overwhelming experience. It is still possible to make fresh and powerful music which has its roots in the seventies. Combining elements of old school progressive rock (Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and ELP,) with modern production values, The Allegory of Light is a complex yet melodic collection of songs that will truly make a prog fan happy. The three musician’s are skillful enough to play the complex and up-tempo material of the band. At one point the guitar of Carl Baldassarre sounds like Fripp and the next time you think you are listening to Steve Howe. The same story goes for Sam Giunta. One minute he sounds like Keith Emerson, the next minute you think of Kerry Minnear (Gentle Giant) or Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard)…

This album is a rare classic ambient masterpiece that could be compared to Flying High and Global Chillage in that it has a flow to the whole album so that each of the tracks although individual are joined together to make a wonderful journey through a unique ambient landscape. There is a greater use of eastern-style vocals and effects than used by The Irresistible Force though and has the feeling more of a group effort rather than an individual one. A lot of the electronic keyboard style is very similar and marks a style that was prevalent among a great era of ambient music that was at a peak in the early 90s.

US band Syzygy was formed in 2003, but with a past history going back to the 1990's and a band then called Witsend. They released their first album as Syzygy in 2003, and six years later their so far most recent studio album "Realms of Eternity" appeared. Towards the end of 2012 their so far most recent release appeared, a massive box set consisting of two DVDs and one CD, featuring concert footage and extensive interviews with the band. And as with their previous creations, self-released through the band's own label. A certain fondness for sophisticated 70's hard rock in general is required, as well as a taste for progressive rock from the same decade…

Classical Crossover / Flamenco / Rumba

This crossover release by the LAGQ primarily features Latin-flavored pieces by composers ranging from Sting to Copland, with Piazzolla, Rodrigo, and Brouwer thrown in. Most of the pieces were arranged by LAGQ members William Kanengiser and Andrew York. The arrangements and performances capture the spirit of the originals extremely well. Maybe it's just because of being played on guitars, but the Paisaje Mexicano and Danza de Jalicso by Copland and the Carmen suite in these transcriptions sound even more Latin than the originals…

With its global line-up of talent and generally high quality control, the Chill Out Or Die series from Rising High Records played a major role in the rebirth of ambient music via dance and rave culture in the 1990's. The music on the Chill Out Or Die albums was actually an exception to the majority of the label's output which focused on club records, from gabba hardcore and hard techno to more accessible trance, techno and house. The joy of discovery, the sense of wonder, the weirdness of trying new things with new technological tools: it's all there in abundance on the Chill Out Or Die series…
