Baseball has been celebrated as "America's National Pastime" for more than 150 years, and recalls what seems to be a more innocent age - long summer afternoons and sandlot ball, fresh rural air, and brownstone stoops. This course, presented by Kenyon College professor Dr. Timothy B. Shutt, is a celebration of baseball's rich past and of a game stronger than ever.

One couldn’t imagine a better opening number for the radio program The Doris Day Show than “It’s Magic,” for each week between March 1952 and May 1953, the versatile song stylist and beloved motion picture star cast a spell over listeners worldwide with an intimate gathering of famous friends filled with music and laughter. Over the course of five dozen broadcasts of The Doris Day Show recorded in Hollywood in front of a live audience and happily preserved on 16-inch transcription discs Doris joined her special guests at the piano for performances of songs she often had never commercially recorded.

Duets & Rarities: The Gold Collection is a two-disc set collecting 40 duets and rarities (natch) featuring Frank Sinatra. Most date from the '40s, his Columbia years, and most can be found on the gargantuan 12-disc set The Columbia Years (1943-1952): The Complete Recordings. The first disc features a few intriguing duets ("New York, New York" with Gene Kelly, "A Little Learning Is a Dangerous Thing" with Pearl Bailey, "Me and My Shadow" with Sammy Davis, Jr., even the oddball "Mama Will Bark" with Dagmar), some ostensibly grabbed from radio shows. The quality is sub-standard, though, and, despite the presence of a few novelties, none but the most rabid Sinatra collectors need bother with it.

One of the maddening aspects of the Andrews Sisters' CD catalog is that there is no way to get a single cohesive body of discs that encompasses all of their best work, or even the best of their extant work. At 60 songs, this three-CD set is the most comprehensive set ever issued on the trio, with 42 of their hits from Decca Records, including every song that reached the number one and number two spots. It offers 14 more songs than appear on MCA's double-CD Their All-Time Greatest Hits, but this set is missing 18 of the group's Top Ten singles, and doesn't even contain everything that's on MCA's double-CD collection; among those tracks not present here are "Well All Right (Tonight's the Night)," "Aurora," "Ti-Pi-Tin," "Shortnin' Bread," "Tico Tico," and "Jealous" (and one should note that even the MCA double-CD doesn't have several choice songs that appear on the same label's separate 50th anniversary volumes).

V-Disc-The Songs That Went To War is a 4CD box set released by Time-Life in 1992 that archives some of the V-Discs made during World War II. As the Wikipedia page indicates, "the records were produced for the use of United States military personnel overseas. Many popular singers, big bands and orchestras of the era recorded special V-Disc records. These 12-inch, vinyl 78 rpm gramophone recordings were created for the Army between October 1943 and May 1949. Navy discs were released between July 1944 and September 1945." Most of the artists were well known in jazz, including a number who were serving in the military during the time they were recorded. A few artists were not famous but shared their talents for the first and only times on V-Disc. All recordings are exclusive to the V-Discs. It's a total of 4CD's. This upload does include scans of the booklet that comes with the box, and is being made available in both FLAC and MP3 @ 320.

2014 album from the super group. The Baseball Project, the critically acclaimed alt-rock supergroup featuring Peter Buck (R.E.M., The Minus 5), Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M.), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Linda Pitmon and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), deliver another batch of songs inspired by the great American past-time. This collection continues their tradition of inspired rock songs that provide passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the sport of baseball. And those who aren't fans of the sport can still enjoy the music, while brushing up on their knowledge.
