Thrash Metal

The band's debut album The Legacy (1987) still holds up as a fine example of hook-laden thrash music. Songs like "Over the Wall" and "The Haunting" balance barreling thrash beats and caustic screams with tuneful guitar licks and semi-melodic vocals. The Legacy is a classic album and perhaps the best Testament release ever.

The Ritual is the fifth album released by Testament in 1992. It is to date the last studio album to feature drummer Louie Clemente, and was also the guitarist Alex Skolnick's last album before rejoining the band in 2005. On The Ritual, Testament began exploring slower, heavier territory for their music while still maintaining their thrash metal roots.

Jazz / Big Band / Vibraphone

Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid-'30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording "Giant Steps") without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a '20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby's Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite's band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong.

Practice What You Preach is the third album by American heavy metal band Testament, released in 1989. The album's lyrical themes are more about politics and society than the occult themes of the band's previous two albums. The title track of this album was a moderate mainstream rock hit, which featured a music video that gained substantial MTV airplay, as did "The Ballad". Practice What You Preach reached #77 on the American music charts. The album was recorded live at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, but is considered a studio album nonetheless.
