I had to get this because I'm crazy about The Cult and all the changes that they've gone through over the years. Five more reels that were found by guitar-guru-soulman Billy Duffy after the main Box Set was released are found here. There are 77 tracks from '86 to '91 that are basic, rudimentary outlines of some killer songs.

Hot Night Demos, Jam Demos & Ceremony Sessions). Each part comes in a gatefold or tri-fold digipack case with a booklet containing extensive liner notes and artwork from the actual demo tapes. All digipacks fit into a larger cardboard slipcase. Most tracks are instrumental versions. Holy grail or overcomplete release; it's up to you to decide…

With 48 of the 90 tracks in this lavish six-CD box set appearing for the first time on CD, Rare Cult lives up to its name. With a selection of single remixes, B-sides, and tracks that just never saw the light of day, Rare Cult charts the rise and decline of one of Britain's premier rock bands, from their first full-length release under the name of the Cult (Dreamtime) to 1994's eponymous album, via the heady peaks of Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple. The most interesting offerings are those that were laid down for the original successor to Love, which was going to be called Peace, and which provide more of a natural progression to the Rick Rubin-produced Electric. Even the later recordings show that they never really lost what made them great–the winning combination of Ian Astbury's distinctive vocals and Billy Duffy's rocking guitar. Indeed, many of the tracks from the sessions for Ceremony and The Cult are better than the ones that actually made the cut. If you're looking for a greatest-hits package, try Pure Cult. However, if you're in the market for a lasting testament to an innovative and ever-changing rock band, look no further. –Helen Marquis

Say what you want about the Cult, a band who will certainly go down as one of the most schizophrenic in rock history, but singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy could sure write a great tune. Just glance at a few titles included on the greatest-hits collection Pure Cult: The Singles 1984-1995: "Edie (Ciao Baby)," "Love Removal Machine," "She Sells Sanctuary," "Wild Flower," "Fire Woman," "Rain," "Lil' Devil" – you get the picture. Spread haphazardly across the disc (rather than in chronological order), each track's uniqueness is even more evident, further showcasing the Cult's fearless creativity. Early songs such as "Spiritwalker" and "Resurrection Joe" will surprise most fans with their class and maturity, while later cuts like "Wild Hearted Son," "Heart of Soul," and "Coming Down" (from their disappointing latter-day albums) are given new life when viewed on their own merits.
