In the late 1940s, the pioneering Decca recording engineers perfected a new set of microphone techniques that allowed the full range of frequencies to be fully heard by listeners for the first time, and the term ‘full frequency range recording’ was launched. It was a major revolution in sound quality, and the beginnings of high fidelity.

Elmore James - The Best Of The Modern Years (2005)  Music

Genre: Electric Blues, Slide Guitar | Label: Blue Note/Metro Blue | # 7243 8 64711 2 3 | Time: 00:54:08

This 19-track compilation focuses on Elmore James' crucial sessions recorded for the Modern Records subsidiaries Meteor and Flair between 1952 and 1956. At the time of these recordings, the distorted amplified sound of James' slide guitar with his unmistakable electrified Robert Johnson lick was helping map out the postwar blues idiom with such classics as "I Believe," "Blues Before Sunrise," "Wild About You," "Mean & Evil," and the extraordinary reworking of Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom" into "Dust My Blues." Even though roughly half of these tracks appear on the equally recommended 1986 Ace release Let's Cut It: The Very Best of Elmore James, this set is a great introduction to the dynamic slide guitarist's earliest recordings.

Bobby Womack - The Best Of The Early Years (1993)

Bobby Womack has had his fingers in so many different pies that his career has probably suffered for it. Instead of being pinned down to one time and one sound (à la Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix), Womack's work includes everything from the grittiest of blaxploitation ("Across 110th Street") to the smoothest of vocal pop ("I Left My Heart in San Francisco"). (And, by the way, he excelled at both.) He was also a rare triple threat – hot guitarist, hitmaking songwriter, and torrid vocalist. But, more than for his musical skills, he's probably best known for marrying Sam Cooke's wife scant months after Cooke's death, and shepherding Sly Stone through the darkest days of There's a Riot Goin' On. The 2008 collection The Best of Bobby Womack: The Soul Years presents Soul Maverick #1 in a tight set of 22 songs from the prime of his career, the late '60s and early '70s. All of his best singles are here, as are the best tracks from his best albums, Communication and Understanding. Finally, the new remastering here provides sound that is vastly better than Womack has ever been given in the digital era. Some fans may still prefer a double-disc set like Midnight Mover: The Bobby Womack Collection, but The Best of Bobby Womack: The Soul Years is easily his best single-disc compilation.

Formed in Chicago back in 1998, The Steepwater Band’s signature sound is a nod to early British blues, combined with a modern, raw and gutsy musical approach. Founding members Jeff Massey (Vocal, Guitar), Tod Bowers (Bass), and Joseph Winters (Drums) have a synergy that comes from years of playing together. In early 2012, the long-time trio was joined by Eric Saylors (Guitar, Backing Vocal) who brought an added depth to the live sound. The band has maintained a grueling schedule throughout the last 16 years, averaging about 140 shows per year.
