Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran met in the winter of 2006, as students of San Francisco State University at an open mic night at the now defunct Canvas Gallery Café. Some years later, on a road trip up the coast of California to Oregon, on the Pacific Coast Highway, they were inspired to write their first song together, which led to the formation of the band. In the fall of 2009 they recorded their independently produced, 5-song debut EP at Amadeo Studios in the Bay Area.

What a difference two years makes! In 1963, Bob Dylan was the Ur-folksinger, rendering his protest songs in an unvarnished voice accompanied by his rudimentary acoustic guitar work. In 1965, “the voice of his generation” went electric, his more surrealistically tinged tunes now flaunting full rock 'n' roll support. The now-classic albums may tell part of the story, but to fully experience the sea change in Dylan’s style and its ramifications among his fans, you have to turn to documentary evidence.

These pieces give me more to think about than most of the long theory books I read. ~Craig Dworkin, author of No Medium In a 1917 letter to Gershom Scholem, Walter Benjamin writes, “Theory is like a surging sea.” This small book takes more than its title from that line—it takes that line as a point of departure in Erich Auerbach’s sense, an Ansatzpunkt, as a compositional principle so that what follows can be read in its entirety as a gloss on the remainder of Benjamin’s sentence: “Theory is like a surging sea, but the only thing that matters to the wave […] is to surrender itself to its motion in such a way that it crests and breaks.”
