The spectacular structures of today, such as large suspension bridges, are the result of scientific principles established during the new iron age of the nineteenth century. The book is concerned with a detailed and critical account of the development and application of those principles (including statics and elasticity) by people of remarkable talent in applied mathematics and engineering. They were, of course, mainly motivated by the demands of the railway, construction boom. Among the outstanding examples chosen by the author is Robert Stephenson's use of novel principles for the design and erection of the Britannia tubular iron bridge over the Menai Straits. A History of the Theory of Structures in the Nineteenth Century is a uniquely comprehensive account of a century of the development of the theory; an account which skilfully blends the personalities and the great works and which is enlivened by little-known accounts of friendship and controversy.

The Firm as a Collaborative Community: The Reconstruction of Trust in the Knowledge Economy

This volume explores the changing nature of community in modern corporations. Community within and between firms - the fabric of trust so essential to contemporary business - has long been based on loyalty. This loyalty has been largely destroyed by three decades of economic turbulence, downsizing, and restructuring. Yet community is more important than ever in an increasingly complex, knowledge-intensive economy. The thesis of this volume is that a new form of community is slowly emerging - one that is more flexible and wider in scope than the community of loyalty, and that transcends the limitations of both traditional Gemeinschaft and modern Gesellschaft. We call this form collaborative community. The trend towards collaborative community is difficult to detect amidst the ferocious forces of market and bureaucratic rationalization. But close analysis of some of America's most successful corporations reveals three dimensions of the emerging form…..

In the first Arab Human Development Report (AHDR), gender inequality was identified as one of the main obstacles to development in the Arab Region, along with the deficits of knowledge and freedom that were addressed in the consequent AHDRs. Written by an independent group of Arab scholars, policy makers, and practitioners, the current volume focuses on the history and contemporary dynamics of Arab women's economic, political, and social empowerment in the region. It details the processes in which gender impacts Arab development while suggesting means of overcoming some of the challenges and building more equitable societies.
This is the fourth installment in the series that was created to provide the Arab region with a needed neutral forum for initiating dialogues and structuring debates to build a reform agenda from within. These reports build on the wealth of Arab knowledge and insight, and present a vision of self-determined change based on a commitment to internal social reform and frank self-assessment. Forging an Arab renaissance is one of the key objectives of the Arab Human Development Series, and to chart the signposts along these routes, the series is a beacon. The reports in this series have proven to be an invaluable resource to scholars and policy makers around the world, and have been well received by the general public and specialized groups.
