A stunningly sophisticated leap into modern musical textures, I'm Your Man re-establishes Leonard Cohen's mastery. Against a backdrop of keyboards and propulsive rhythms, Cohen surveys the global landscape with a precise, unflinching eye: the opening "First We Take Manhattan" is an ominous fantasy of commercial success bundled in crypto-fascist imagery, while the remarkable "Everybody Knows" is a cynical catalog of the land mines littering the surface of love in the age of AIDS.

DEADMAN are a new powerful force on the folk & roots rock scene of Austin, Texas. Bandleader Steven Collins and his sextet have won a sizeable following over the last years - among them the Blue Rose label. After years of trying to hook up, Blue Rose have now succeeded in signing them. In July, as an appetizer, Live At The Saxon Pub had been released to introduce them to the audience on this side of the Atlantic. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive to enthusiastic. Their tight sound - reminiscent of The Band - which effortlessly brings together Southern Rock, Texas Folk, Country Rock and 70ies old school rock'n'roll is certainly convincing to anyone flying the Americana flag.

Maybe it’s the combination of baritone saxophone with piercing brass. Or maybe it’s the array of fine soloists who each have something genuine to offer. Most likely, it’s the capable, high-soaring trumpet of leader Dan McMillion that makes this big band album so appealing. Their sound is superb, and the arrangements come from noted experts in the field. Bold and brassy, McMillion is “Maynard with a good, full tone quality.” His sky-writhing trumpet captures the spotlight. Is it any wonder that high notes and popular songs wind up together on McMillion’s albums?

Toots Thielemans - Only Trust Your Heart (1988)
Bop, Swing, Latin Jazz
MP3 | VBR ~180 kbps | 12 tracks | 81.4 MB

Although the liner notes claim that this Concord release was Toots Thielemans' first recording as a leader in more than a dozen years, somehow the harmonica great's 14 European dates (not to mention sets released by Stash and Pablo) were overlooked. In any case, this is a pretty definitive session by the harmonica virtuoso who is joined by pianist Fred Hersch, either Marc Johnson or Harvie Swartz on bass, and drummer Joey Baron. The material is filled with challenging and generally underplayed standards (including Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil," Thad Jones' "Three and One," Benny Carter's lyrical "Only Trust Your Heart," and Thelonious Monk's "Little Rootie Tootie"), plus two fine Hersch originals. Ranging from hard bop to Brazilian music and post-bop, this is a consistently enjoyable and highly recommended outing.
