Enjoy your favourite chart toppers from the swingin' Sixties, including The Shadows, Roy Orbsion, Eddie Cochran and Brenda Lee. The 1960s saw funk and soul music rising in popularity; rhythm and blues in general remained popular, and this style was commonly associated to Girl groups of the time, whose fusion of R&B and Gospel with rock and roll enjoyed success until the mid-part of the decade. Aside from the popularity of rock and R&B music in the 1960s, Latin American as well as Jamaican and Cuban music achieved a degree of popularity throughout the decade, with genres such as Bossa nova, the cha-cha-cha, ska, and calypso being popular. From a classical point of view, the 1960s were also an important decade as they saw the development of experimental, jazz and contemporary classical music, notably minimalism and free improvisation.

Welcome to P49, bringing you the latest selection of new progressive sounds swirling around the ether. There's a strong melodic flavour to many of the tracks on offer, with the return of Jadis and also of former TesseracT singer Ashe O'Hara with Voices From The Fuselage, not to mention European offerings Holon (Norway) and Alex Carpani (Italy). There's also some intriguing electronic prog from worriedaboutsatan, bolstered by the vocals of Anathema's Vincent Cavanagh, OddsFiche's haunting ambience and Edensong's mix of folk prog and metal. There's also psychedelia from The Honey Pot and the return of 70s rockers Jerusalem, too. A little something for everyone.

Three decades after the fact, people looking at releases like This Time by Basie would tend to dismiss it as pandering, Count Basie doing a "pops"-type outing – the cheesy cover art even emphasized the songs over Basie and his band. Nothing could be further from the truth, however – this 16-song release reveals a wonderful body of work, and deserves to be better known. For starters, This Time by Basie swings, smooth and easy but taut, or hot and heavy. From Sonny Payne's understated cymbal intro to "This Could Be the Start of Something Big" to the bluesier notes of "One Mint Julep," Basie and company sound like…

In the early 1970s, tile hippie generation began burning out on the long, loud, improvisational rock songs of the psychedelic era. Musicians and fans alike sought new directions. The dominant trend was toward confessional, folk-based songs, while the nostalgia movement that produced Sha Na Na reflected the yearning for a simpler time and music. ~Don McLean’s

Disco dominate pop music in the latter half of the ‘70s, but there was still room on the charts and the airwaves for all shots of unlikely gems: one-shorts, comebacks, Tex-Mex weepers and fiddle-happy foot-stompers, smoldering old-school R&B duets, the rousing theme from a boxing movie and even a surprise cameo from Ludwig van Beethoven. Best-selling instrumentals in every genre-from Sleep Walk to surf rave-ups, from Henry Mancini to Herb Albert-were nothing new. Even classical great Johann Sebastian Bach had been plundered twice: in Lover’s Concerto by ‘60s girl group the Toys and for Apollo 100’s Joy in 1972…

Great Britain's JSP label took a chance in 2006 by issuing a four-disc overview of rembetika (the "officially designated" Greek underground and criminal communities) called Rembetika: Greek Music from the Underground. It was official because at one point in the 20th century, the music was actually officially banned by the Metaxas government (in 1937) and didn't peep… More above ground for another 11 years. (Gangster rappers and metalheads take heart: you were not the first nor will you be the last.) That set, like this one, appropriately titledRembetika 1: Greek Music from the Underground, included four CDs, all of which were annotated with fine notes, and production masters cleaned up as much as possible – no easy feat since a lot of this music was originally released on either 78s or cylinders – but some survived, amazingly, on recording tape
