The first sound on Back in Black is the deep, ominous drone of church bells – or "Hell's Bells," as it were, opening the album and AC/DC's next era with a fanfare while ringing a fond farewell to Bon Scott, their late lead singer who partied himself straight to hell…

Amazingly, it has been 30 years since Roy Orbison‘s 1987 television ‘comeback’ show A Black & White Night. To mark the occasion ‘Roy’s Boys’ – Alex Orbison and Roy Orbison Jnr – have gone back to the source footage and audio and re-edited, remastered and, if you are feeling fanciful, ‘re-imagined’ the television special, to create an expanded audio/visual document that will be available on CD/Blu-ray or CD/DVD in February. The concert – filmed at Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles – was shot using seven separate cameras and there were hundreds of hours of footage that went unused and unseen. Roy’s youngest son Alex has gone back to this source material and, with the help of co-editor Luke Chalk, re-edited to reflect the correct set order as seen by those who attended the show.

A great album recorded in 1963 for Atlantic – one of our favorite ever! Jack Wilson's one of our favorite piano players, and we rave about him all the time on these pages – and one of the reasons why we love him so much is that he was often accompanied by Roy Ayers, who started out his career playing vibes in his group! The pair together are a dream, and this album is arguably their best effort – filled with moody modal cuts, and lots of lyrical interplay that hits these beautiful high points, then dives into pits of darkness. Titles include "Harbor Freeway", "De Critifeux", "Corcovado", "Jackleg", and "Nirvana & Dana".

At times, McDuff demonstrates how soul-jazz organ stars used to make albums back in their '60s heyday, playing then-current pop hits like "The Age of Aquarius" and the theme from Mission: Impossible (which, thanks to cinema, was a hit all over again in 1996 when this CD was made). We also hear McDuff trying out his vocal cords for the first time on Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry"; actually, he merely talks the lyrics over the rhythm section – and at 70, he's entitled to this charming lark.

Splitting his time between the electric and acoustic pianos and a bit of organ, Jarrett teams up with drummer/percussionist Jack DeJohnette in a series of experimental duets, his only electric session for ECM. The all-acoustic title number ranges all over the lot, from tootling on a bamboo (?) flute to the energizing barrelhouse gospel riffs that would bloom in the solo concerts.

Folk, Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:45:06 | 104 MB
Label: Rootbeat Records | Release Year: 2017

This is the first album in five years from a highly original singer-songwriter. Jack Harris was born in Wales and as a teenager was feted in Texas, where he played the SXSW festival and won the Kerrville festival new folk award, previously awarded to Gillian Welch. He has a deep, commanding voice, and is backed here by his own finger-picked guitar and an assortment of instruments, including fiddle, keyboards and percussion, played by producer Gerry Diver, famed for his work with Sam Lee and Lisa Knapp. The melodies mix influences from Americana to British folk, while the poetic, often surreal lyrics range from the powerful, apocalyptic vision of Vanished Birds to the jaunty, finely written James Joyce tribute Molly Bloom. It’s a compelling set that was made possible through a crowdfunding campaign.

“After 15 albums, i’ve taken all of my thoughts about the history of racial injustice and created a musical interpretation for modern times,” says trance blues artist Otis Taylor. His latest, Fantasizing About Being Black is shattering and thought-provoking. By looking backwards, Otis Taylor has made an album that is unfortunately still prescient.

On his fifth album, 2017's Backlash, Black Joe Lewis takes a few steps forward and a few steps back. After dropping the band name the Honeybears (but without dropping the band itself) on 2013's Electric Slave, Lewis is once again using the group moniker. And, as if to further reassure folks that Lewis is still fronting a first-class soul revue, the performances on Backlash sound especially taut and emphatic, with horn players Derek Phelps (trumpet) and Joseph Woullard (baritone sax) making the most of the band's rough-and-ready grooves.
