Since their start in 2008, EGRESS has been told to find a box in which they could fit themselves; however, one needs a rather large box to fit six musicians—and their array of accordions, tubas, guitars, trombones, pianos, and drums. So they haven’t bothered trying and instead they move forth doing what they do best; cascading onto the stage in an explosion of sound and color that’s equal parts unruly vaudeville, ebullient world beat band and three ring circus music. The six-person troupe plays a swooning amalgamation of styles that catapults the audience through time and space with unexpected shifts of styles and time signatures.

Recent years have seen an increase in the number of African Americans elected to political office in cities where the majority of their constituents are not black. In the past, the leadership of black politicians was characterized as either “deracialized” or “racialized”—that is, as either focusing on politics that transcend race or as making black issues central to their agenda.
The Balancing Act: Combining Symbolic and Statistical Approaches to Language

The Balancing Act: Combining Symbolic and Statistical Approaches to Language (Language, Speech, and Communication) by Judith Klavans, Philip Resnik
Publisher: The MIT Press | Number Of Pages: 202 | Publication Date: 1996-12-06 | ISBN-10: 0262611228 | PDF | 3 Mb

Symbolic and statistical approaches to language have historically been at odds – the former viewed as difficult to test and therefore perhaps impossible to define, and the latter as descriptive but possibly inadequate. At the heart of the debate are fundamental questions concerning the nature of language, the role of data in building a model or theory, and the impact of the competence-performance distinction on the field of computational linguistics. Currently, there is an increasing realization in both camps that the two approaches have something to offer in achieving common goals. The eight contributions in this book explore the inevitable "balancing act" that must take place when symbolic and statistical approaches are brought together – including basic choices about what knowledge will be represented symbolically and how it will be obtained, what assumptions underlie the statistical model, what principles motivate the symbolic model, and what the researcher gains by combining approaches.

"The statistical and symbolic approaches to language have emerged from different starting points and methodologies and have tended to focus on different goals. The resulting tension and confusion has obscured the fact that both approaches can make crucial and often complementary contributions to a deeper understanding of how language works. The papers in this volume show that this is indeed the case: they carefully articulate the theoretical advantages of combining techniques and describe a number of concrete experiments that illustrate and support a systhesis of both approaches." – Ronald M. By 1975, Grand Funk Railroad had reached a new level of fame and fortune thanks to pop-friendly albums like We're an American Band and Shinin' On. However, they had not dropped the turbo-charged rock & roll that built their early success and that fact is proven by this exciting double-live album. Caught in the Act covers all the highlights of their catalog up to that point, including both the major hits and a generous sampling of album-track favorites.
