Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range, Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. The group drew attention with their cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy", which became a regional hit. It was followed by their acclaimed debut album Safe as Milk, released in 1967 on Buddah Records. The first disc in this set concentrates on this period of Beefheart s career, featuring a radio broadcast of a live performance at The Avalon Ballroom in 1966, and a number of other tracks from various radio sessions from 1967 and 1968. By 1974, six albums in and frustrated by a lack of commercial success, Beefheart released two records of more conventional rock music that at the time were critically panned. This move, combined with not having been paid for a European tour and enduring Beefheart's less than benevolent behavior towards them, led the entire band to quit. Beefheart eventually formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians.

Although it was rendered obsolete by the release of the superior The Dust Blows Forward: An Anthology, this career retrospective is noteworthy for a few reasons. It concentrates exclusively on Beefheart's work for Virgin — Unconditionally Guaranteed, Blue Jeans and Moonbeams, Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Doc at the Rader Station, Ice Cream for Crow, and the Light Reflected Off the Oceans of the Moon EP — so it may interest people who already own Trout Mask Replica and want to get only one more Beefheart album, as well as those who have difficulty finding his aforementioned Virgin releases. Also, the compilation intersperses brief snatches of Beefheart's songs in between the 18 complete songs on this album — mostly spoken word excerpts from "Apes Ma," "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat," "Cardboard Cutout Sundown," ""8!" Poop Hatch," "Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee," "Party of Special Things to Do," and "Flavor Bud Living." This appears to be an unsuccessful attempt to make this compilation seem more like a cohesive album by recreating the informal ambience of Trout Mask Replica; most people will probably find it annoying, but some may enjoy it. Otherwise the album contains numerous good songs but omits some of Beefheart's best material from his Virgin period, such as "Ashtray Heart" and "Hot Head."

Having temporarily disbanded the Mothers Of Invention, Frank Zappa recorded this exceptional solo album. His group was renowned for musical satire, but here the artist opted to showcase his prowess on guitar. Aside from "Willie The Pimp," which features a cameo vocal by Zapppa's old friend Captain Beefheart, the set is comprised of instrumentals. The players, including Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Ian Underwood, are uniformly excellent, combining to provide a solid jazz-rock platform for Zappa's compulsive soloing. Here the guitarist relishes a freedom which, while acknowledging past achievements, prepares new territories for exploration. As such, HOT RATS was a pivotal release in Zappa's oft-misunderstood career.

Specializing in epochal rock & roll noise in the grand tradition of the Velvet Underground, the Jesus & Mary Chain, and a guitar and amp being pushed down a flight of stairs while cranked up to ten, the Hunches were a band from Portland, Oregon who set new standards for energetic cacophony during their run in the 2000s. Guitarist Chris Gunn and lead vocalist Hart Gledhill first met when they were on the same little league team, and the two began making music together when they were in eighth grade. (Gunn claims to have taken guitar lessons from Zoot Horn Rollo, aka Bill Harkleroad, the former guitarist with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, though Gunn had little positive to say about the experience.) Gunn and Gledhill later formed a band called the Conmen, and when that group parted ways, they teamed up with bassist Sarah Epstein (ex-the Roswells and the Flip-Flops) and drummer Ben Spencer (formerly with the [Real] Pills and Jetpack) to create the Hunches.

Knifeworld’s Kavus Torabi has never been afraid to use the crawlspace between prog, psychedelia and full-blown, overt pop, only to fill it with the expansive, the melody-driven and the just plain quirky. The band’s third LP is no exception – imagine XTC collaborating with Captain Beefheart whilst slurping on a mojito or two, and you might get some idea.
