Violin Sonata no. 9 in A major, commonly known as the Kreutzer Sonata is a violin sonata Ludwig van Beethoven published in 1802 as his opus 47. It is known for its demanding violin part, unusual length (a typical performance lasts slightly less than 40 minutes), and emotional scope - while the first movement is predominantly furious, the second is meditative and the third joyous and exuberant.

Ian Watson and Susanna Ogata's acclaimed series on Coro Connections continues with the third album in their exploration of Beethoven's Sonatas for fortepiano and violin. Written at a time when the composer was struggling to accept his growing deafness, the three sonatas on this volume were published together in 1803 as his Opus 30 and provide a remarkable trilogy - a collection of incredible variety and sophistication.

Beethoven - Sonatas - Brautigam

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Piano Sonatas (Brautigam)

Lame encoded | Covers | Tracks | Fserve, Fsonic, HotF

Following his excellent Haydn and Mozart fortepiano recordings for BIS, Ronald Brautigam turns his attention to Beethoven's complete piano music. The playing is riveting. The singular timbral qualities of Brautigam's instrument (a McNulty fortepiano based on an 1819 Conrad Graf model) enhance Brautigam's interpretive revelations. My original rating for this release was "wow!", which translates into "10/10". Don't miss it.

These are among the finest modern recordings of Beethoven's Cello Sonatas. The two players are well matched, as they should be in this music, which is just as demanding for the pianist as for the cellist, if not more so.
