''What seraphic music. It must be Bruckner'', remarked a friend who entered the room as I was playing this recording. I cannot recommend this . . . too highly, both as performances and recordings. Seraphic is the word. Bruckner's three settings of the Mass are enough in themselves to convert the heathen. I cannot possibly decide which of them I like most, though my head tells me that No. 2 in E minor, with its wind-only accompaniment, is the greatest.

The reappearance of this DG set means that once again both of Eugen Jochum’s Bruckner symphony cycles are available at the same price level. The EMI cycle was recorded in 1975-80 with the Dresden Staatskapelle, while DG’s was taped primarily in the 1960s with the Bavarian Radio Symphony and the Berlin Philharmonic. There’s little to choose between the two interpretively, as Jochum pretty much maintained his individualistic approach to Bruckner throughout his career. So, take away the uniquely burnished tones of the Dresden brass and for the most part you’ve got two identical cycles (type Q2340 in Search Reviews for a detailed appraisal of the EMI set, as released by Musical Heritage Society).

Gramophone:
Not so under Jochum, whose new performance is grand, powerful, spontaneous. Aided by powerful sound, the performance is like no other in its power and impact though it partially resembles the Furtwangler in general intention. It is a more daemonic reading than the early Karajan or the Haitink. dramatic rather than epic but with a huge scope all of its own.

In 1926 Eugene Jochum made his successful concert debut as a conductor. He acquired a repertory of over 50 operas and conducted concerts all over Germany. The acknowledgment of his excellence led to his appointment as musical director for Berlin radio. His reputation grew particularly in the field of the German Romantic Symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner and was presented with the Brahms medal by the city of Hamburg.

"…Now, I will speak briefly about this SACD, because I cannot say anything more than this: it is a miracle. The way EMI remastered these old takes from 1961 and 1963 is astonishing. I am not saying that this SACD will sound as perfect as a new production, but… what levels of mastery had those technicians in the past that used to edit the tape sometimes cutting it with razor blades.
Not to tell the clarity that Schuricht gives to the music. He is probably an old fashioned conductor for nowadays standards, as we can say about Furtwängler, Klemperer or Jochum, for example. But those good old days gave us lots of great musicians that are now a source of inspiration for the new stars…" ~SA-CD.net

This recording of Bruckner's Eighth Symphony is from Sir John Barbirolli's last London concert, some 10 weeks before his death, when the conductor knew heart problems might overtake him at any time. What better way to say goodbye than with one of the greatest symphonies ever written? And this craggy, towering masterpiece is given as urgent a performance as you'll ever hear (complemented by vivid recorded sound).
