I adore the warm timbre that emanates from a big band playing at its most subdued. Walkin' Tiptoe, for example, really comes into its own right when the wind section plays so softly that the muted trumpet rises above it without extra amplification. My very first compositions all met one basic demand: they must not be too hard, since I wanted to perform them myself. My technique gradually improved and with it my writing. This piece owes its very existence to my limited skills as a pianist. The left hand is so simple that I was able to fully concentrate on the right-hand melody: at last I could play a piece of piano music all by myself.

The curious blend of pianist Eliane Elias with conductor and arranger Bob Brookmeyer leading the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra makes for a surprising mix. Brookmeyer, long established as one of the top jazz writers and a phenomenal valve trombonist to boot, was not familiar with the recordings of the Brazilian keyboardist, but he was clearly up to the challenge of scoring her music. Brookmeyer gives "Just Kiddin'" a big and bold post-bop treatment, with an underlying funky rhythm and a bit of electronics thrown in for fun. Elias and Brookmeyer share the solo spotlight in the breezy setting of her ballad "So in Love." Far more low-key is "Moments," with sparse piano lines backed by Brookmeyer's rich scoring for the brass and a fine solo by flugelhornist Henrik Bolberg Pedersen.

While David Linx's name may not be writ large here in the States, the fifty-one year-old singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist is a mega-star in his native Belgium, and in 2005 was named Best Jazz Musician in Europe, which covers a whole lot of territory. On Brel, Linx sings music composed by his Belgian forerunner, the late and legendary Jacques Brel, accompanied by the world-class Brussels Jazz Orchestra (whose personnel are not listed on the bare-bones promotional copy save for saxophonist / music director Frank Vaganee)…

Near the end of 1965, harmonically advanced trumpeter/cornetist Thad Jones organized a big band with drummer Mel Lewis that from February 1966 onward played Monday nights at the Village Vanguard. During the next decade, the orchestra became famous and gave Jones an outlet for his writing. Central Park North, recorded and released in 1969, testifies that one could be a big band and progressive at the same time. Flügelhornist Jones and percussionist Lewis are joined by a large cast of players, including tenor Joe Farrell, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and pianist Roland Hanna. The music runs the gauntlet from funky soul-jazz to more gentle traditional work, sometimes within the same piece…

5-Part Suite for Jazz Orchester In 2014, the suite state of mind for jazz orchester was created. It is, in its scope and versatility, the result of Tobias Wembers long-time experience in writing contemporary music. Wember’s compositions occur in special moments, through which this varied and comprehensive suite, based on everyday emotions and situations was shaped. Soft, melancholy sequences are replaced by pulsating, advancing music. Contemplative melodies encounter powerful, structured and richly coloured passages.
