On April 12th, 1972, in the middle of the European leg of the tour Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band stopped off at the Beat Club studios in Bremen to film a session for later transmission. Of the four song session filmed that day only one track has ever been broadcast. The session kicks off with a bass solo entitled `Mascara Snake'. This short piece was named after a former member of the Magic Band Victor Hayden, who had appeared on the Trout Mask Replica album…

Bluejeans & Moonbeams is the ninth LP by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, originally released in 1974. Despite its uncharacteristically mainstream sound the album failed to chart. Most observers consider it to be one of the Captain's weakest works, leading fans to christen the line-up of the period the 'Tragic Band'…

Unconditionally Guaranteed, the universally derided album from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band is commonly regarded as the nadir of the Captain’s career, the pariah among the pearls. From the cover depicting a weasel-eyed Beefheart clutching fistfuls of money to the lightweight and accessible tunes centring on themes of love, sex and happiness, people claim to hate this album with a burning passion. Even Beefheart wrote it off, insisting that buyers should take it back to the shop and get their money back, taking advantage of the guarantee…

Compilation of Captain Beefheart's known/surviving television appearances from 1974 (and one from 1973). The quality is very good (well, excellent given the age, sources and relative obscurity of the material). The bulk of the disc is provided from a French TV concert, with the rest all from UK/continental shows - nothing from his native country…

This two-fer compiles two Beefheart albums originally released in 1972. The Spotlight Kid was a stripped-down, slide-guitar-filled move toward Beefheart's beloved Delta blues, dark in outlook and more traditional in approach, although it was still distinctly Beefheart's take on the blues…

Produced by Captain Beefheart himself, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was a further refining and exploration of the musical ideas posited on Trout Mask Replica. As such, the imaginative fervor of Trout Mask is toned down somewhat, but in its place is an increased self-assurance; the tone of Decals is also a bit darker, examining environmental issues in some songs rather than simply concentrating on surreal wordplay…
