Romanza is the first greatest hits album by Italian singer Andrea Bocelli, released internationally in 1997. The album is considered Bocelli's breakthrough album, and remains his most commercially successful to date, topping charts all across Europe and Latin America. Andrea Bocelli, born 22 September 1958) is an Italian tenor, multi-instrumentalist and classical crossover artist. Born with poor eyesight, he became completely blind at the age of twelve following a football accident. In 1992, Italian rock star Zucchero held auditions for tenors to make a demo tape with of the song Miserere from his album of the same name, to send to Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. After hearing Bocelli on tape, Pavarotti urged Zucchero to use Bocelli instead of him. The demo tape was from Caterina Caselli, who had discovered Bocelli. Caselli is Bocelli's current manager and producer..

This CD reissue dates from Thad Jones' single year of leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra before his health began to fail. Caterina Valente (best known as a pop singer) has a warm voice and sounds comfortable singing in a jazz-influenced middle-of-the-road style. There is little improvisation on the date and Thad Jones' arrangements leave surprisingly little space for solos; his only appearance on cornet is on "Solitude."

Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" met with instant success on its premiere in Berlin 1821, rapidly spreading throughout Europe. Audiences identified readily with the folk melodies and hunting character of its Bohemian setting. The story tells of Max's struggle to win Agathe in marriage. The desperation which leads him to trade with the devil in order to regain his lost marksman's skills, finds resolution when fate intervenes to prevent the fatal "free bullet" from striking Agathe, saved by the sacred roses in her bridal coronet. In this Achim Freyer production from the Wüttemberg State Opera, the Huntsman's role is taken by Toni Krämer, with Caterina Ligendza as Agathe, Raili Viljakainen as Ännchen and Wolfram Raub as Samiel, under the bariton of American conductor Dennis Russell Davies.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Monteverdi Choir, Choeur du Théâtre du Châtelet and Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique in a landmark recording of Berlioz's towering opera. A tragic tale of love and fate, war and peace and the intertwined destinies of two cities, the opera is based on Virgil's imperial vision of the founding myth of Rome. The American tenor Gregory Kunde as Aeneas and the Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci lead an international cast in this stunning production.

Chet Baker's entry in the Compact Jazz series is essentially an odyssey between two continents, chronicling his wanderings through Europe and America over the span of a decade. The disc begins with some of his 1955 Paris sessions, and then skips over to Baden-Baden for an eerie duo encounter with pop singer/guitarist Caterina Valente that is rhythmically close to a premonition of bossa nova. On to Chicago in 1958, where Chet communes and races with Stan Getz for 15 often thrilling minutes on "Halfbreed Apache." Two New York tracks from 1965 catch Chet nonchalantly blowing at ballad tempo with a section of reeds and rhythm section. Finally the disc backtracks a year with four tracks from a New York sextet and quartet (whose personnel includes the young Bob James or Hal Galper on piano) where Chet is in prime bop form; no limp tones here. Although these are not his most famous sessions, you'll get a better impression of Chet's work here than with some other single-disc samplers that come to mind. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide
