By bringing Catone to disc, Carlo Ipata is celebrating the pasticcio, especially those curated by George Frederic Handel, as is the case wtih this new Glossa release. In a co-production involving the Fondazione Teatro di Pisa and the Handel Festpiele Halle, Ipata brings a further slant on Handel's oepratic career in London: whilst being busy with running the second Royal Academy of Music and writing his own operas, the composer was striving to present London audiences with selections from the best of recent Italian operas by other composers - all at the same time as giving his star singers the opportunity to show off early in the opera company's season. One result was Catone in 1732, with music by Leo, Hasse, Vivaldi, Vinci, Porpora as well as by Handel himself: company members included Senesino, Anna Maria Strada del Po and Antonio Montagnana.

Naive’s Vivaldi Edition is proud to present the 15th opera, and the 50th release, in the acclaimed series. Conducted by one of the masters of baroque opera, Alan Curtis, and gathering an impressive, vocal cast from the top echelons of Baroque singing 'Catone in Utica' is one of the Venetian master’s great, late operas. Composed four years before his death and premiered at Verona in the spring of 1737, 'Catone' inaugurated Vivaldi's third and last opera season. The Red Priest's farewell to the Teatro dell’Accademia Filarmonica was to resemble the crowning piece of a fire-works display.

I Viaggi di Faustina is part of a series from Spain's Glossa label, with each album examining the legacy of a singer from the 18th century, re-creating the repertory sung and even the sound of the voice insofar as such a thing is possible. The title I Viaggi di Faustina refers to Faustina Bordoni, the Neapolitan singer who became famous for her onstage brawl with her rival Francesca Cuzzoni, shrewdly egged on by Handel's promoters in London. But her career was centered on Naples, where she married German-born composer Johann Adolf Hasse; the "viaggi" here are trips both to and from Naples, and the music consists of excerpts from operas she is known to have sung.

Another little known but excellent Italian progressive band. Their roots were in psychedelia, but their sound wasn't quite developed on their debut. Close to Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, early Premiata Forneria Marconi and also Emerson, Lake & Palmer or Le Orme. Two classic albums for any fan of seventies Progressive.
"Purgatorio" (2016) is the final part of Metamorfosi's 'Dante' trilogy, which started back in 1972 with the release of "Inferno".

With more than a million copies sold, the soundtrack of Gérard Corbiau's film 'Farinelli' contributed considerably to the international renown of Les Talens Lyriques, in 1994. Back then the voice of the castrato Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli (1705-1782), was created using a computer to mix the voices of countertenor Derek Lee Ragin and soprano Ewa Mallas-Godlewska.

The National University Library in Turin houses several extremely important musical collections, including over 450 Vivaldi manuscripts, many of them autographs. With the purpose of exploring this immense heritage and bringing to life many unpublished works, the Instituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte, in concert with Naïve Classique and the Library of Turin, has undertaken to record a complete edition on CD of the Vivaldi scores held in Turin.

There is definitely no lack of heroic roles in the Gluckian repertory apart from the very well-known Orfeo from Orfeo ed Euridice: many memorable parts were assigned by this composer for the alto voice (either male castratos or female contraltos) - and it is precisely this repertory, written for excellent interpreters and yet still rarely performed today, which is celebrated on this album. As a consequence of a specific historical st of circumstances, Gluck had the good fortune to work with the final alto singers of his generation: not only Gaetano Guadagni, but also Giovanni Carestini, Vittoria Tesi and many others.

While it isn't Handel's most obscure opera (hum a few bars from Catone, anyone?), Siroe, Re di Persia is definitely on the margins. It's hard to say why exactly, although the unflatteringly edited Metastasio libretto (by Nicola Haym) is surely part of the reason; the character and conflict development of the original are largely missing from the version Handel set. But the music is Handel at his best, and let's face it: from the perspective of a modern listener, plot is not the main draw of opera seria. With that in mind, Harmonia Mundi's complete recording, with Andreas Spering and the Cappella Coloniensis, is an excellent first step toward giving Siroe wider exposure. It's well played, thoughtfully conducted, and it features an excellent trio of leading ladies.

This special project gathers the finest arias from the operas released in the naive Vivaldi Edition, to commemorate the 50th title in the series 'Catone in Utica'. Most of those arias were real discoveries, at the time of release, and have become hits that helped to re-establish Vivaldi as a major opera composer. To name a few, Sol da te from Orlando furioso by Philippe Jaroussky, Alma Op-pressa from La fida ninfa by Sandrine Piau, Ho il cor già lacero from Griselda by Marie-Nicole Lemieux, or Gelosia from Ottone in villa by Julia Lezhneva.
