Label: Bureau B

9 compact discs in individual card-sleeves packaged in a 5x5 blue box. Includes two informational booklets entitled '1971-1976' and '1977-1981'. Limited to 1,500 sets. This albums is a terrific compilation of some of the most essential experimental & electronic albums ever & reflective of the Golden era of Krautrock. If you have all the albums there is a live comp album of 40 minutes both about 20 minutes long, 1st track from '72 & 2nd from '77 that is unreleased & displays their more industrial side but as there is so little live work from Cluster from the '70's its a good addition.

After a scission of the avant-garde group "Kluster" due to the departure of Conrad Schnitzler, the two musicians Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius go to work in duet as "Cluster". The band's first years were clearly orientated to Krautrock and to experimental electronic music. Consequently, the production of the band started with massive, radical improvisations, constructed around electric organ works, electronic collages, guitar sound manipulations, feed back. The result is rather similar to Kluster's underground, conceptual music, very chaotic with lot of distortion and reverb. With its repetitive, hypnotic guitar patterns and embryonic electronic collages, the second album "II" can be seen as a classic in 70's German electronic underground…

Trikolon were a very gifted trio from Osnabrück. As precursor of Tetragon, they played a very varied progressive rock. They even were influenced by classic and blues. Their only LP “Cluster” was already released in 1969. It was edited by themselves in a number of 150 copies. Thus it had been one of the most earliest works of this kind. Correspondingly modest were the means with which it was recorded, and here lies its only weak point. But whoever, for example, is listening to “Blue Rondo”, will be excited about the true firework performed on organ, accompanied by racing drums. Hendrik Schaper on keyboards, the creative element of the band, performs brilliantly…

An excellent compilation album, Old Land is comprised of tracks from Cluster and Eno's two major collaborations: Cluster and Eno (1977) and After the Heat (1978). All of Eno's vocal tracks are here: "The Belldog," "Tzima N'arki," and the dark, industrial "Broken Head." On "The Belldog," Eno's voice never sounded better, and the quirky "Tzima N'arki" brings to mind Lennon's experiments on "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Revolver). Eno's backward vocal track sounds like a surreal or foreign language. When coupled with layers of backward instrumental tracks, the music takes on a rather creepy quality.

In Brian Eno's first collaboration with Cluster, the best of this album's instrumental pieces are too emotionally rich to waste as mere background music, evoking feelings of hesitancy and regret that rescue the music from mere vapid prettiness. Three tracks in particular indicate things to come. "Wehrmut" is an ethereal synth piece with the pace slowed to a tantalizing crawl. "Steinsame" features a treated guitar playing a slow figure over a dark, almost funereal synth melody. "Schöne Hände" uses watery synth effects to highlight a shivery rhythm pattern.

Cluster II is the second full-length album by German electronic music outfit Cluster and their first album with the band reduced to a duo. Conny Plank, who was credited as a member on the first album, decided to concentrate on production and engineering. Plank is still credited as a composer together with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius on all tracks.

Berlin 2007 was a monumental performance for Cluster as it marked the first time that they had peformed live in Berlin since their 12 hour concert in the Galerie Hammer in the Europacenter in 1969. The performance was a massive success as a sold out crowd cheered loudly for Cluster to return to the stage. Fortunately, the concert was preserved for posterity and is proudly presented here on Important Records.
