The core story of the piece is the split of political values between Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel on the one hand, and her younger daughter Sylvia on the other. The mother and daughters were united at first by their passionate belief in the right of all women to have the vote…

What could be more experimental on the ultra-pluralistic contemporary scene than a composer unconcerned with individuality? For much of the time, David Bedford’s Recorder Concerto offers the kind of discreetly accompanied scales and arpeggios that have been standard issue from Vivaldi to Malcolm Arnold…

David Bedford was originally commissioned to write Great Equatorial as part of the celebrations surrounding the renovation of the room containing the Great Equatorial Telescope at Greenwich Observatory, in London. Just ten minutes in length, his initial vision was subsequently expanded into six movements totaling a little over one hour, a vast and sweeping suite that defies ready categorization…

Though it is seldom ranked among the composer's greatest works, Rigel 9 is actually one of the most easily digested, as David Bedford links with science fiction author (and now lyricist) Ursula LeGuin to create a song cycle that, though it is certainly rooted in LeGuin's own territory, will certainly not disappoint Bedford's own followers…

The Song of the White Horse is the original 1983 pressing of the album subsequently reissued (by Voiceprint and Classicprint) as Star Clusters, Nebulae & Places in Devon/The Song of the White Horse. Originally issued on Mike Oldfield's short-lived eponymous label, it is comprised of just two pieces of music – both of which can now be referred to as the title track…

The follow-up to ''The Odyssey'', this album continues in a similar vein. The instrumentation is again comprised of synthesizers, Solina Strings, piano, orchestral instruments and female voices, and again we have an appearance by Mike Oldfield and this time also by Mike Ratledge…

It's safe to say that most people who become cognizant of this very obscure album's existence will do so through a Mike Oldfield discography. David Bedford conducted the choir and strings on Oldfield's Hergest Ridge album, and Oldfield returns the favor by guesting as the soloist on this 45-minute Bedford orchestral work, recorded the same year (1974). That being said, the potential purchaser is warned that this is not a guitar concerto, nor a "in-all-but-name" Oldfield album in spite of his significant contribution…

Debut solo album from one of England's most surrealist composer, and this bizarrerie came out after a spell in Kevin Ayers' Whole World and helping Kevin reach an entirely different dimension than his usual quirky pop songs with the very strange Shooting At The Moon…

A tribute to the late David Bedford. Bedford employed a wide range of styles and media in a half-century career that saw him move from young iconoclast to eclectic purveyor of music for all seasons and needs. While better known for his innovative Prog Rock albums, the current program focuses on his concert music, including "Aleluia Tympanis" (which re-purposes some themes from "Instructions for Angels"), his Lennox Berkeley-inspired Symphony No. 1 and the colorful Recorder Concerto, which among other special techniques, calls for the soloist to play two instruments at the same time.

Narrated by Robert Powell this work was released by Virgin Records in 1975. Great album sleeve with a noteworthy credit being Mike Oldfield assisting on guitars. The album itself comprises of two parts, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner 1 & 2. Oldfield's association with David Bedford went back to The Kevin Ayers and the Whole World band. While Oldfield was flexing his creative muscle and getting frustrated within the confines of that band he confided more and more with David Bedford and struck up a strong rapport with the keyboard player that lasted long after 1975.
