Never mind the Symphonie espagnole and Le roi d’Ys, Edouard Lalo is the last of the great unknowns in 19th-century French music. His mature instrumental works combine the wisdom drawn from his professional playing experience with the familiar flair for rhythm and colour. They are likely to transform any opinion you may hold: it isn’t often that the inspiration of Beethoven was so well digested in France. The first two trios don’t really count as mature, and although they contain fine things, especially in the scherzos, their characteristic soul, sweep and dash are often clumsily handled. With No. 3, form and feeling are as one, the first movement’s surges integral to its progress to a hushed end, while the slow movement builds a powerful span from a sustained melody. Between them comes the irresistible piece better known in Lalo’s later arrangement as a Scherzo for orchestra. These performances have the necessary robustness without stinting on delicacy.

Composer Edouard Lalo's work encompassed the period of Romanticism that witnessed the evolution of the romance de salon genre into the melodie francaise or French art song. It is an injustice of posterity that only Faure, Duparc and Debussy acquired true fame in this genre. This collection from baritone Tassis Christoyannis and pianist Jeff Cohen featuring the two scenes de salon for voice and piano, the seven romances and the 23 melodies, shows that Lalo easily stands alongside his more well-known countrymen.

Like a good wine, good music must also mature. Consciously or unconsciously, Trio Parnassus which was formed in 1982 has followed this maxim in the course of its almost 20-year history. Perfection, love of detail, a keen feeling for moods, and a taste for discovery is what distinguishes Yamei Yu {violin), Michael Gross (cello) and Chia Chou (piano). The reaction of the public and the critics was correspondingly enthusiastic in 1996 at the New York debut in the Great Performers Series at the Lincoln Center, in 1997 at the Masters Series at the London Wigmore Hall, and in 1999 at the National Gallery’s Chamber Music Series in Washington.

Édouard Lalo made his mark on French music with his opera Le Roi dYs, but his instrumental output also has considerable historical importance, with its resolutely innovative aims for its time. More specifically, his concertante music rewards the attentive ear with a brilliant, skilfully constructed style, studded with fresh rhythmic and harmonic inventions that renew the melodic and orchestral language of the genre.
