This monumental mid-nineteenth-century epic from Jan Troell charts, over the course of two films, a Swedish farming family’s voyage to America and their efforts to put down roots in this beautiful but forbidding new world. Movie legends Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann give remarkably authentic performances as Karl Oskar and Kristina, a couple who meet with one physical and emotional trial after another on their arduous journey. The precise, minute detail with which Troell depicts the couple’s story – which is also that of countless other people who sought better lives across the Atlantic – is a wonder to behold. Engrossing at every step of the way, the duo of The Emigrants and The New Land makes for perhaps the greatest screen drama about the settling of America.

In the middle of the 19th century, Kristina and Karl-Oskar live in a small rural village in Smaaland (southern Sweden). They get married and try to make a living on a small spot of land. However, the small size of their land, the infertile soil, and some bad harvests makes it tough. One of their children even starve to death. Thus, they decide to emigrate to the U.S. They meet a group of farmers with their families planing the emigration under the leadership of a banned priest. They sell everything and embark for the U.S. The journey on the sailing ship is long and tedious. Some of the emigrants will never reach the New World.

Indians and Emigrants: Encounters on the Overland Trails by Michael L. Tate
University of Oklahoma Press | January 16, 2006 | English | ISBN: 080613710X | 352 pages | PDF | 3 MB

In the first book to focus on relations between Indians and emigrants on the overland trails, Michael L. Tate shows that such encounters were far more often characterized by cooperation than by conflict. Having combed hundreds of unpublished sources and Indian oral traditions, Tate finds Indians and Anglo-Americans continuously trading goods and news with each other, and Indians providing various forms of assistance to overlanders.

A "different" work of Yiannis Markopoulos, without his well known "cretan" style. The great composer deals with the big social problem of emigration that was intense in Greece at the period. Superb interpretations by Vicky Mosholiou and Lakis Halkias, in one of the best albums of their career. Enjoy another timeless work from the rich repertoire of Yiannis Markopoulos in a new, fully remastered edition.
