“Those familiar with John Carpenter's own minimal soundtracks for his films Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13 probably would have credited the soundtrack of The Thing to the director as well. After all, the recurring theme — a dark, heartbeat-like pulse that circles in on itself without release — gives the film its particular tension and foreboding. But it's credited to Ennio Morricone, as is the rest of the album. The soundtrack is notable for being one of Morricone's earliest electronic scores and for acknowledging the influence of Carpenter's seminal work in music (and those who influenced him, such as Goblin). It also opts for an atmosphere of dread without punctuating the darkness with obvious scary orchestral bursts.”Review on allmusic.com

Prohibition Era. The Tex-Mex border in a town called Jericho, occupied by an Italian gang and an Irish gang of bootleggers just far enough from Chicago or Brooklyn to call this a Western. A great western, "The Long Riders" meets "Miller's Crossing."
Sheriff Bruce Dern ain't doing too good a job keeping the peace. Bruce Willis is an hombre with no name - until the gang insists. He gives himself the name of John Smith, as good a handle as any for a guy who's about to bring down Jericho and the hell that's in it. This is all done to a sensational score by Ry Cooder that makes this American in the same way that Ennio Moricone's scores made Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns so definitively European.

A dark, brooding, and surprisingly restrained work by Ennio Morricone, also more sentimental than his usual standard, and very operatic – parts of it sound like music for a Broadway extravaganza waiting to happen.

Criminally overshadowed by the moral uproar surrounding Adrian Lyne's film remake of Vladimir Nabokov's groundbreaking novel Lolita was Ennio Morricone's remarkable score, a hauntingly beautiful (and beautifully haunting) effort on par with Il Maestro's finest work. The music possesses a darkly dreamlike sensuality that perfectly communicates the erotic obsession at the material's core. Morricone's elegant melodies are daring yet subtle, shaded by melancholy strings and ethereal electronic textures. Milan's official soundtrack release is something of a misfire, however, interrupting Morricone's reverie with period pop hits like Ella Fitzgerald's "Tain't What You Do" and Louis Prima's "Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo)." Great music, without a doubt, but poorly matched to the intimacy of the instrumental score.
