The Afghan Whigs have announced the release of a 20th anniversary edition of their classic album Black Love. It has been specially remastered for the reissue, while the release will also carry nine previously unreleased demos, outtakes and studio jams from the album sessions. It will be available in a triple-vinyl and double-CD edition. The album was the band's fifth overall and came off the back of the widespread success of previous album Gentlemen. Black Love was inspired by Greg Dulli's want to make a film noir movie, which was never eventually made. Amongst the outtakes featured on the new release are acoustic versions of album tracks 'Going To Town' and 'Crime Scene Part Two' as well as a piano cover of New Order's 'Regret'.

After the acoustic outing 'The Mess' and the accompanying theater tour Daan is back with entirely new material. The germ of "Nada" is located in the soundscapes Daan made while running the eponymous documentary by Peter De Bruyne in Spain. Together with producer Stef Van Alsenoy were all recorded under the microscope, magnified, features text and kneaded into songs. An unorthodox way of working that crazy enough Daan's most understated and organic plate returned. The tongue-in-check grandeur of Le Franc Belge 'gives way to bluesy Americana, film noir grooves and impressionistic instrumentals.

For this, his seventh soundtrack for director Peter Greenaway, Nyman deftly orchestrates a mix of strings, horns, and voices to produce another of his fetching and romantic minimalist backdrops. The opening "Memorial" is the highlight of the lot and drives along with stuttering saxophones, an insistent string arrangement, elegiac brass solos, and the soaring vocals of soprano Sarah Leonard (Leonard would be featured on a large part of the Prospero's Books soundtrack). The piece was originally inspired by a 1985 Belgian soccer match tragedy, in which 39 Italian fans were killed. Nyman utilized a death march in his earlier Greenaway collaboration, Drowning by Numbers, and revives the scheme to great effect here for what would become the main theme of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. Nyman contrasts the piece's climatic quality with two relatively sedate yet brooding numbers.

John Carpenter s 1980 follow-up film to his smash hit Halloween featured ghost sailors terrorizing a Californian coastal community as a dense fog descends on their homes. The multi-talented filmmaker not only directed and wrote his films but also created his own unique brand of atmospheric synthesiser scores. This updated version of Silva Screen s long deleted and sought after 2000 reissue brings together not just the original album which featured 20 minutes of newly released music but a second 20 track disc of the entire score, drawn from the original tapes, remastered by long-time Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth.

With riveting performances by the modern prog-rock legends Stick Men – Tony Levin, Markus Reuter and Pat Mastelotto – , "Prog Noir" is ambitious, achieving and immediately essential. Cinematic themes, towering grooves and intricate arrangements are all on tap, and shower down in abundance. Proving conclusively that the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts, this herculean effort exceeds any perceived limitations of the trio format – satisfying even the most devout and demanding of listeners.
