Fly away home: Eighteen short stories (The Iowa School of Letters award for short fiction) by Mary Hedin
English | 1980 | ISBN: 0877450994 | 257 Pages | PDF | 8 MB

Mary Hedin writes luminous stories about people we have known in times and places we thought were lost. Full of absorbing everyday details, incandescent flashes of fantasy, and rich layers of imagery, her fiction is sometimes dark and disturbing, but the vision is always humane. A radiant sense of place is dominant in her work–the mountains, vineyards, and suburbs of California, and the lake and farm land of her native Minnesota.

Why aren't there more recordings like Fly Away Little Bird? Perhaps it's because there aren't more musicians of this stature. The studio reunion of the legendarily experimental Jimmy Giuffre 3 in 1992 was reissued in 2002 on the French Sunnyside label and is a radical departure from anything the trio had done in the past. These studio apparitions of the band are their most seamlessly accessible while being wildly exploratory. In addition to the consummate improvisations and compositions by Giuffre (title track, a redone "Tumbleweed"), the tender meditations by Steve Swallow ("Fits" and "Starts"), and the bottom-register contrapuntal improves by Paul Bley ("Qualude"), this is a trio recording that uses standards such as "Lover Man," a radically and gorgeously reworked "I Can't Get Started," "Sweet and Lovely," and "All the Things You Are" to state hidden textural possibilities inside chromatic harmony. There is never the notion of restraint in the slow, easy, and proactive way these compositions are approached.

The members of this band from Oberhausen, Germany, met around 1972. By the mid-70's, they had become a fine group of self-taught musicians, except for one of the two guitarists who had some classical guitar and cello training. They made a name for themselves when they provided live accompaniment to Stanley Kubrick's film "7117" at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival. In 1978, they rented a studio where they had access to a Mellotron and recorded the album "Fly Away", of which a mere 1,000 copies were printed and sold at their concerts. That same year, however, one of their guitarists stepped down and that spelled the beginning of the end for all. In 1980, they gave their last show and then officially dissolved…

Jeff Denson has been alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz's bassist of choice for the past several years, and it's easy to see why on this superlative duet album of gospel music with the explosive pianist Joshua White, who, at age 28 appears ready to take the world by storm. White has almost twenty years of experience playing gospel music—obvious by the great liberties he uses to transform this music while retaining a visceral authenticity.
