For some time now I have been playing duo with the very talented young guitarist Erik Söderlind. When Laila Gavatin approached me with the suggestion that we make a CD in dedication to our guitar heroes, it turned out that Erik and I have many favourite names in common: Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, George Benson, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Joe Pass to name only a few…

Peter Johannesson and Max Schultz first met in 1977 and have since worked together in numerous musical situations. Peter's first CD "Sixtus" featuring Herbie Hancock was recorded in 1995. Max was also there and contributed several compositions. Peter's collaboration with Herbie Hancock has continued through the years with concerts, tours and television appearances. Peter's second CD "New Life" was made in 2005 with his band "Sixtus," which featured long time friends Peter Asplund, Hеkan Brostrцm, Magnus Lindgren, Karin Hammar, Daniel Tilling, and of course Max, among others. Everyone in the band contributed works on that recording.

While Vince Guaraldi's piano playing and composing have had a big influence on George Winston's work, there is little sense of direct imitation in this affecting tribute to the man who composed the memorable music for the television specials based on cartoonist Charles M. Schultz's Peanuts characters. Winston's solo piano style is fuller and more reflective than Guaraldi's, a hearty blend of powerful chords and subdued rhythms. It seems to embrace Guaraldi's tunes, both the Peanuts songs, like the title tune and "You're in Love, Charlie Brown," and Guaraldi's other music, like "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" and "Monterey," which seems to blend somber tones with an almost luminous quality. The warmth, wit, and whimsy here evoke memories of the best work of Guaraldi and Schultz.

Label: Sony | Rel:1989

Released in 1989, this anthology is a generous cross-section of tracks from Benson's CTI period, where he consolidated his jazz/soul guitar credentials just before striking gold with Warner Bros. All of the albums except Benson & Farrell are touched upon with one or two tracks, and CBS is enterprising enough to reach a bit further for "I Remember Wes" (from the anthology CTI Masters Of The Guitar) - an octave-laden theme that soon enough turns into pure Benson - and a gentle solo outtake from Bad Benson, "From Now On." The only "unrepresentative" track per se is the vocal on "Summertime," in the sense that there were hardly any vocal tracks to pick from in the CTI catalogue.
