Glen Travis Campbell is an American rock and country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and occasional actor. It isn't accurate to call Glen Campbell "pure country," but his smooth fusion of country mannerisms and pop melodies and production techniques made him one of the most popular country musicians of the late '60s and '70s. Campbell was one of the leading figures of country-pop during that era, racking up a steady stream of Top Ten singles, highlighted by classics like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "I Wanna Live," "Wichita Lineman," "Galveston," "Rhinestone Cowboy," and "Southern Nights." Boasting Campbell's smooth vocals and layered arrangements, where steel guitars bounced off sweeping strings, those songs not only became country hits, they crossed over to the pop charts as well, which was appropriate, since that is where he began his musical career.

This compilation mixes material from various sources from the latter part of Vic Damone's career (which is to say, after he departed the major labels in the late 1960s). He tackles a selection of Jimmy Webb's late-'60s hits including "Didn't We?," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "MacArthur Park," as well as other songs of the era such as the Stevie Wonder hit "For Once in My Life," O.C. Smith's "Little Green Apples," Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and the theme from the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, "We Have All the Time in the World." Studio recordings give way to live tracks, while the album's final selections sound like they may be its earliest recordings.

A special double album released to commemorate the tenth anniversary of instrumental rock kingpins the Ventures, this set includes over 20 hits that signify the year 1970 like few other albums could. Late-'60s nuggets like "Everybody's Talkin," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "MacArthur Park," "Hey Jude," "Spinning Wheely," and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" provoke a few interesting covers from the band, though anyone the least bit familiar with the Ventures will be unsurprised at any of the songs here…

By 1969, black artists were following rock's lead and recording extended epics. At the forefront of such experimentation was big bad Isaac Hayes, coauthor of countless Stax classics and an artist in his own right. On this, his second album, Hayes takes two MOR-pop benchmarks, Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and spins them out into slow-building sermons lasting 12 and 18.5 minutes apiece. Heavily romantic, they predate by two years Barry White's symphonic adventures in the same style, revolutionizing soul music in the process. Meanwhile, on the album's third epic, the 10-minute "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic," Hayes and his backing band the Bar-Kays wind up sounding, bizarrely, like a black Crazy Horse.

Four-song long-player ushered in the era of album-oriented soul with hits "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Walk On By." Reissue contains notes by Jim James of My Morning Jacket.
Until Isaac Hayes released Hot Buttered Soul in 1969, soul music had been a singles-oriented genre. Best known as the partner of David Porter in writing such Stax hits as "Hold On! I'm Coming," "Soul Man" and "B-A-B-Y" among others, Hayes, along with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield gave the soul album a higher purpose, superseding the standard practice of assembling LPs around recent hits and filler.
