Aziz Sahmaoui sets out once more with his magical group, conjuring up sonorous dreams and intoxicating trance states. On this new journey, in which heady refrains are coupled with a divinely undulating groove, the Moroccan poet-singer has achieved a glorious harmony between Maghreb rock, jazz and gnawa music. With the full fire of his spellbinding voice, the cofounder of the Orchestre National de Barbès and former associate of Joe Zawinul confirms his reputation as one of the foremost singer-songwriters of contemporary world fusion music, a reputation that reaches across Europe and beyond to the Middle East and the United States.

7 for 4's new album starts with Diffusion, which introduces us with a mellow jazzy guitar line. 7 For 4 didn't change their recipe: as with the previous albums, it soon changes for a rock-metal style which could remind me of the band Royal Hunt without lyrics. It's always cut by jazzy lines on bass and guitar, hard to hate, really. It's followed by Indigo Dunes, where the keyboards have a sound similar to the ones used by Liquid Tension Experiment, and a similar use too. In Overall, this track has a slower tempo than most of what 7 for 4 gave us by the past, but it's nonetheless really interesting, especially when considering the basslines taking their places in there. A really balanced piece, one of the best on the CD in my opinion. …

The Gnawa is a popular Sufi brotherhood that expresses their faith through music and dance, culminating in a trance state. It is on the lila derdeba (trance nights) than Gnawas manifest their exceptional gifts as exorcists and healers, treating patients with physical or psychological suffering. On this album, the group Alwan explores the connections between Gnawa and jazz. The concept was born following Alwan's meeting with the Mad Nomad Quartet and Dar Gnawa and is inspired by the musical repertoire of lila derdeba. A bonus DVD documentary explores the mystical world of the Gnawa using audiovisual documents gathered by Jacques Willemont over 40 years and features insights from anthropologist Viviana Easter.
