This is a classic, the epitome of the band's early Daevid Allen phase with Ph.P.'s (pothead pixies) in full, blazing glory. In its infancy, Gong was a unique prog rock band that branched out in all directions at once while most other prog bands chose simply one path or another. Camembert Electrique is a testament to that…

Formed by Australian expatriate Daevid Allen in Paris in 1969, Gong made a name for themselves as one of the most innovative and unique bands of the Seventies. Camembert Electrique, recorded in 1971, was the group’s third album. A skilful blend of jazz-influenced space rock, unconventional psychedelia and bizarre experimentation, it includes their classic ‘Foghat Digs Holes In Space’.

The essential Live Etc. sports incredible live versions of material from four Gong albums (Camembert Electrique, Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, You) and one studio track which had been recorded in 1974 as an attempt at a single. The live material, recorded 1973-1975, consists of performances from several different incarnations of the band, making this an excellent starting point for anyone interested in sampling Gong…

This impressive, but rather underrated soundtrack album to documentary movie about motorcycle racing was taped by the classic Gong line-up in May 1971, at the very beginning of the recording sessions for their amazing "Camembert Electrique" LP and then released by French Philips at the end of the year. There's no keyboards or synthesizer parts at all, just extended guitar-dominated, heavy psychedelic and mostly instrumental jams (with occasional vocals and space whispers) filled with very intense and mind-blowing glissando guitar notes & vibrating sax noises against hypnotic & pulsating rhythm section.

In 1970, the world got its first taste of the original pothead pixie, Daevid Allen's Gong, as Magick Brother was released in France on the BYG label. Allen's wife, Gilli Smyth, penned all the tunes on the album, and Allen's now-classic "Ph.P." drawing style graces the inside of the gatefold. Leaning a little toward the pop end of the spectrum, Magick Brother is a fairly light album, devoid of the blatant psychedelic/hippie qualities which shine through so brilliantly on the later Camembert Electrique…

French pseudo-beatnik Dashiell Hedayat persuaded the psychedelic, prog-rocking Gong to back him up on Obsolete, his second (and final) album project. This is the Continental Circus-era Gong, and the song structures here resemble that album's stripped-down sound. Propelled by Allen's spacy guitar and Malherbe's spicy sax, the tunes on Obsolete, though at times experimental, aren't as involving or full-blown as those on Gong's Camembert Electrique, recorded on the heels of Hedayat's album. Hedayat sings, or rather talks, in French on each piece. He wrote/composed all the "songs" in the autumn of 1969; the compositions were then recorded in May 1971…
