Who says experimental musicians can't play pop? Norway's Stian Westerhus is best known as one of Northern Europe's most fascinating abstract guitar stylists. His recent album Didymoi Dreams with vocalist Sidsel Endresen was a fascinating pairing of extreme guitar abuse with gibbering vocal explosions. As well as collaborations with Puma, Terje Isungset, Nils Petter Molvær, Jaga Jazzist, the Britten Sinfonia and others, he has released three acclaimed solo albums on Rune Grammofon since 2009, the latest being the stunning The Matriarch And The Wrong Kind Of Flowers (2012).

As brilliant as their previous album "Enter" is, with "Ritual" they have outdone themselves and produced a beast of beauty and power, extremely well executed, beautifully recorded and produced from only two days in the studio. Free improvisations, spontaneous horns, keyboard frenzy, abstract electronics, guitar mayhem and not to forget; those glorious twin voices of Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg. It´s about mysteries and rituals; in music and in life.

Over the last 25 (approx) years, Motorpsycho's founding members Magnus Snah' Ryan and Bent Sæther have gripped tight on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride since they first met at high school in the central Norwegian town of Steinkjer; they've embarked on music progressions over multiple genres, collaborations, the occasional line-up change, accumulating fanatics all over the globe, and awards too, cementing their position as Norway's most eminent rock behemoths. This fantastical trip was documented by their first anthology, the 2CD Supersonic Scientists: A Young Person's Guide To Motorpsycho (containing one song from every normal studio album since 1993), which Rune Grammofon released in October 2015. But that was then, and Here Be Monsters is right now, the newest compelling episode.

October 2015 finds Motorpsycho the focus of a retrospective exhibition at the Norwegian National Museum of Rock (Rockheim), located in the bands hometown Trondheim. In conjunction with this major look back at more than 25 years of Motorpsychodelia, time is ripe for the first ever Motorpsychodelic anthology, and the band have themselves curated the Supersonic Scientists - A Young Person’s Guide To Motorpsycho 2CD and 2LP editions. Releasing their first ever anthology after 25 very productive years is asking for trouble. There must surely be as many possible track selections as there are fans and we guess the discussions will be many.

It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band, often being named as Norway's best live band - surely quite rare for an instrumental band - they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles. On this, their fourth studio album, Elephant9 once again join forces with Reine Fiske - the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen and The Amazing - for an epic slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz prog psychedelia. "Silver Mountain" is their finest album so far, where all the parts fall into place.

Phaedra's debut album "The Sea" (2011) received fantastic international reviews in magazines as diverse as The Wire, Uncut, Shindig and Prog, drawing lines to Vashti Bunyan, Elizabeth Fraser and Nico. Chicago Reader said "this is one of the loveliest, most striking albums, unlike anything I've heard in years". "Blackwinged Night" is the follow-up, and the second album in a triology, a lyrical and musical cycle with its own mythological structure. From the ethereal folk universe of the debut, "Blackwinged Night" dives into a darker dreampop underworld, where acoustic elements of woodwinds, strings and marimba are mixed with layers of analog synths, bigger drums and darker basslines.

Influenced by the Rock in Opposition and Canterbury scenes, Oslo, Norway-based avant-prog band Panzerpappa were initiated by drummer/percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Trond Gjellum, who discovered a like-minded collaborator in saxophonist/keyboardist Steinar Børve and joined with Børve to form a quartet, also including guitarist Knut Tore Abrahamsen and bassist Jørgen Skjulstad, in 1998. The group played some live concerts and in 1999 issued a CD-R entitled Passer Gullfisk, but a series of lineup changes would begin early in the new millennium - a period that also saw the release of a second CD-R, Hulemysteriet - and by 2002 Gjellum was the only remaining original member of the group…
