When Nikolaus Harnoncourt retired from the stage in December last year, it was his expressed wish to release the broadcast recording of his last project, Beethoven s monumental Missa solemnis as his personal legacy. The Missa solemnis concerts at the Styriarte Festival Graz and the Salzburg Festival in summer 2015 were his last public performances. This recording of Beethoven s late masterpiece was made from material captured at the Graz concerts and rehearsals. As a result of his life-long research on Beethoven, he conducted the work for the first time with the Concentus Musicus Wien on period instruments. The Concentus is joined by the Vienna based Arnold Schoenberg Choir featuring Laura Aikin (soprano), Bernarda Fink (alto), Johannes Chum (tenor) and Ruben Drole (bass).

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Beethoven was one of the first composers to reveal the expressive and technical qualities of the cello, both in his symphonic works and in his chamber music. Some illustrious predecessors (Bach, Geminiani or Vivaldi) had already worked on the creation of an autonomous repertoire of concertos and sonatas for the cello, but Beethoven transformed the former instrument of accompaniment and support of the continuo into a true partner of a music based on dialogue, exchange, and contrast.

Genre: Classical | Label: BIS

After recording the complete solo fortepiano works of Haydn, it was inevitable that Ronald Brautigam would record the complete fortepiano concertos of Haydn. Of course, it helps that while Haydn's complete solo fortepiano works take up 11 discs, his complete fortepiano concertos take up only a single disc, so Brautigam could record it before moving on to record the inevitable complete fortepiano music of Beethoven. On its own, Brautigam's recording of Haydn's concertos is wonderful: light, bright, ebullient, full of humanity, and suffused with poetry. Brautigam's tone is clear but ringing, his touch is graceful but powerful, his interpretations characterful but self-effacing.

The Seraphim Trio makes a welcome return to ABC Classics with an album of Beethoven's piano trios. Beethoven's trios are amongst the finest works in the chamber canon, taking the form spawned by Mozart and Haydn and developing it into a musical genre which reached symphonic proportions in its musical language and virtuosity. The album combines two early trios with the later 'Ghost', showcasing the radical development of Beethoven's style.

Classical | DECCA 478 1267 | 2009 | TT: 73:48 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Covers | 315 Mb

The Aeolian Quartet's epic cycle, originally released in the Seventies, was one of the gramophone's major contributions to Haydn's cause. Listening to the performances anew I find they have lost none of their freshness: they were based on the latest research, and the playing itself is always intelligent and thoughtful, with Emanuel Hurwitz's sweet-toned violin-playing a great asset throughout.
