Hiromi Uehara's version of jazz is unique without being willfully strange – clearly deeply rooted in the straight-ahead jazz verities, she nevertheless writes with a distinctly postmodern sensibility, gleefully juxtaposing wildly disparate musical elements and infusing everything with a joyful energy. In fact, joyful energy is probably the most significant hallmark of her music; on her latest album, even her attempt at a ballad eventually winds up in swinging uptempo territory, and just about everything else either rushes headlong or rocks out strongly in midtempo.

Cascading, skittering, effervescent, energetic, virtuoso, surprising, accomplished. You’d need a stream of adjectives to describe how these two play together. An easier way to say it might be to think of four hands attached, somehow, to the same brain. An orchestra of pianos, perfectly conducted by a single musical mind. This record is the result of 1 night, 2 pianos, 2 sets, 4 hands, 12 songs, 20 fingers, 176 keys, about 600 people in the audience and thousands of ideas exchanging between the two pianists and the audience, …as Chick Corea says in his liner notes.

Recorded at the Shinagawa Stellar Ball in Tokyo in December 2005, the DVD captures the playful yet masterful dynamics between Hiromi and her two highly talented sidemen. Throughout the ninety-minute presentation, the trio derives its creative energy from a constant give-and-take of technical precision and raw enthusiasm. The results are sometimes passionate, sometimes playful, but always compelling.
