John Scofield updates his early-90s quartet with drummer Bill Stewart and saxophonist Joe Lovano by recruiting bassist Larry Grenadier for his fetching, appropriately titled impulse! debut, Past Present. Between 1990 and 1992, the celebrated guitarist released three well-received discs Meant to Be, Time on My Hands and What We Do for the Blue Note label as the John Scofield Quartet. On those records, either Marc Johnson or Dennis Irwin played bass. Nevertheless, Grenadier also has history playing with Scofielld; he toured with Scofield in support of the 1996 disc, Quiet.

Best known as the frontman for early-'70s hitmakers Christie, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jeff Christie's career long predated that band. In fact, his earlier group, Outer Limits, should have been just as big, if not bigger than Christie themselves. Formed in the dying days of 1963, the band released three singles, gigged incessantly, and took part in the legendary package tour featuring Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, and Amen Corner. Yet they never managed to land a hit or record an album. However the Outer Limits did leave behind a slew of demos before folding in 1968, 22 of which features on the first disc of this two-CD set.

1995's "Past Present Future" is an 11-song compilation from Swedish metal band Morgana Lefay. This band, along with Tad Morose, was key in developing the Swedish power metal sound in the ‘90s, and is one of the few bands that actually sounds like classic Savatage.

If anybody really needed additional proof that all of their songs are timeless, classic and independent of trends and fashions, then Fair Warning provide that proof incontestably on Pimp Your Past. The current album by the band from Northern Germany features 2016 versions of the most important tracks from their first three studio albums Fair Warning, Rainmaker and Go!, originally released between 1992 and 1997. Every single note sees Fair Warning underline the motto which they have chosen for themselves: a good song will always remain a good song…

After presenting a program of gnarly originals for quartet on ULTIMATUM, his Criss Cross debut, pianist George Colligan offers a beautifully paced trio recital. Mixing well-wrought originals with iconic standards like "Sophisticated Lady" and "Body and Soul" and such less-traveled repertoire as "Holiday for Strings" and "Three Views of a Secret", Colligan again displays the musicality and personal perspective that have marked his oeuvre over the past decade. The rhythm section: bassist Vinente Archer and master drummer Bill Stewart.

While Tad Morose would eventually become a pretty straight forward heavy metal band, they started out with a string of sort-of-progressive metal albums in the 90’s. Their 1993 debut, "Leaving the Past Behind" plays like a bunch of Metallica riffs, stitched together in a vaguely progressive fashion with some Tony Martin era Black Sabbath style vocals and a lot of cheesy keyboard atmospherics on top. There’s a certain soulful edge to many of the vocal melodies (especially the choruses) and some tender keyboard melodies, even though the riffs are often rather muscular in style. This dynamic creates a certain tension and release effect, where melodic choruses and keyboard passages stand in contrast to the choppy, lumbering, heavy passages.

I hope I'm not the only person out there who's been patiently-but-impatiently awaiting Orbs' sophomore album after the successful experimentation employed on their initial release, Asleep Next to Science. The dynamic, playful, and childhood, science, and space-centered album dissolved the "supergroup" albatross immediately conferred upon the band created by Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me), Adam Fisher (Fear Before), and Ashley Ellyllon (Abigail Williams, Cradle of Filth) and turned it into something beautiful - a grandiose prog rock album with delightfully strange lyrics.

Jørn Lande has an amazing voice, just perfect for melodic rock. When he wants to, Jorn sounds so similar to David Coverdale that he might just fool even the most diehard of Whitesnake fans. And then, next minute, Jorn might pull off a great Ronnie James Dio tribute in a cover song. The album features covers of what Jorn states as his biggest musical influences, and as such, is composed mostly of classic hard rock and heavy metal acts such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake and Kiss.
