After the composer Paul Juon had resigned from his professorship at the Berlin College of Music in 1934, he retired to the shores of Lake Geneva, where he wrote a series of remarkable orchestral works over a period of six years. These works by the Moscow-born Juon, whose ancestors had immigrated to Russia from Switzerland, included his last two symphonies, which once again display all his special qualities as a teller of musical tales and a lyrical and playful tone poet.

Katherine Jenkins is classified as a lyric mezzo. This is album is the first one to showcase the beautiful lower range of her voice. If you love Jenkins' high notes, they are there too. But it seems as if she has taken great care to avoid belting out the high notes. Instead she sings with a softer touch that often makes her voice sound, at the same time, delicate and confident. Her beautiful voice still soars; it's just more like a dove than an eagle.

Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Free Improvisation / Violin

Leroy Jenkins (March 11, 1932 – February 24, 2007) was a composer and avant-garde jazz violinist and violist. Happy Birthday… Violinist Leroy Jenkins was at the helm of Sting, which played funky and free, did originals and vintage spirituals, and would shift from stretches of collective improvisation to challenging solo exchanges. They were a unique, intriguing group, but sadly didn't last. This 1984 album, reissued on CD, presented them at their best, displaying the breadth of influences, genres, sources and styles that converged and resulted in the work of a great band.

This is the follow-up album from Alex, Tim and Mike, this time they forsake any embellishments from any other instruments relying solely on guitar, bass and drums. In the intervening two years of these album releases I can safely assure you that the band as a whole have become more confident in the manner of not only their musicianship but their musical direction as well; the pin-point focused song writing and arrangements from Alex has allowed the band to expand and develop into a powerhouse of sound and styles without losing the plot. The album kicks off, with a sparkling and strident wading guitar that towers impressively…

Flow (1998). Delving deep into the viscosity of life, Jon Jenkins masterfully engages the metaphor of water to ponder the fabric of existence with his powerful second release. Delicately crafted and sculpted soundscapes of sublime keyboard textures combine with the ambient electric guitars of Jeff Pearce, David Helpling, and Howard Givens, which along with occasional percussion create moments of subtlety and power. This is a profound listening experience that is both dramatic and introspective, and ultimately inescapable…

Karl Jenkins, according to several reckonings, is the most often performed active classical composer. He is admired and reviled in equal measure, and there is no sense in trying to reconcile those camps here. Instead one can look to the appealing factors in Jenkins' earlier music and ask in what way they are present here. Jenkins is a populist, tonal composer, but he has little in common with the likes of John Rutter. His works are large, even monumental, combining a collection of Romantic British moves with influences from world music, and uniting it all with a common theme and set of musical devices…
